Pokémon Legends: Z-A is an action RPG set in Lumiose City, where daytime exploration and preparation feed into the nighttime Z-A Royale. Start by learning the day-night loop, then build your team in the wild zones, keep it healthy and ready, and pursue Mega Stones as your roster grows. This guide covers those essentials and explains what to know about the Mega Dimension story and game editions.
How to get started in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
The game launched on October 16, 2025, for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Its story takes place in Lumiose City, where an urban redevelopment plan aims to help people and Pokémon share the city. Wild zones provide spaces to encounter Pokémon as that plan unfolds. The Pokémon Company’s launch announcement describes it as an action RPG.
Use the daytime to prepare
Daytime is the practical window for exploring, catching and battling wild Pokémon, and replenishing useful items. When night falls, the Z-A Royale begins. Treat each day as a preparation cycle: strengthen your team and stock up before entering the nighttime competition. The official beginner guide describes this day-to-night rhythm.
How to catch Pokémon and build your team
Approach carefully, then throw a Poké Ball
Aim and throw a Poké Ball to catch a Pokémon. Some Pokémon flee when they notice you, so hiding from view or approaching from behind can improve your chance to get close. If a Pokémon is difficult to catch, battle it to lower its HP before trying again; the official guide says this can make it easier to catch.

Watch out for Alpha Pokémon
Alpha Pokémon are larger than their regular counterparts and have glowing red eyes. They are particularly powerful and difficult to catch, and will chase and attack after noticing you. If you manage to catch one, it can join your team.
Track discoveries and keep Pokémon healthy
The Pokédex app is on your Rotom Phone. Entries register when you catch, evolve or trade Pokémon. Pokémon Centers heal exhausted team members and sell useful items, making them a helpful stop between outings.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
How to train Pokémon and prepare for the Z-A Royale
Winning battles grants Exp. Points. As Pokémon level up, their stats can increase; they may also learn moves or become able to evolve. Evolution methods vary, however: not every Pokémon evolves simply by leveling up.
Before nightfall, check that your team is in fighting shape and that you have useful battle items. The Royale is the nighttime competition, so use the day to explore and improve your options rather than entering unprepared.

How Mega Evolution and Mega Stones work
To Mega Evolve a Pokémon, it must hold the corresponding Mega Stone. The official guide identifies two ways to obtain stones: purchase them at the Stone Emporium or trade Mega Shards for Mega Stones at Quasartico Inc. headquarters. Break Mega Crystal clusters around Lumiose City to collect shards.
Some stones have a separate online reward condition. The Pokémon Company announced Greninjite, Delphoxite and Chesnaughtite as promotion rewards in online Z-A Battle Club Ranked Battles, and said they are not normally obtainable through regular gameplay. Ranked reward availability can depend on the current promotion, so check the official announcement for its terms rather than assuming a past reward is still active. Online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership, subject to the applicable terms.
