If you want a racer built around changing tracks, vehicle tuning, and playing across more platforms, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the better choice. Mario Kart World is the stronger fit if you want to explore a connected world or race online with the largest listed field. “Better” depends on which of those experiences you value.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds vs Mario Kart World: which should you get?

CrossWorlds makes the stronger case for players who want structured races with room to experiment. Its signature Travel Rings alter a race mid-event, and its vehicle gadgets support different builds. Mario Kart World aims at a different kind of play: its connected world and Free Roam invite exploration beyond the race itself.

Hardware may settle the choice before features do. CrossWorlds is available across several console and PC platforms, while Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 game. If you already own a compatible system, choose based on the kind of racing you want.

Why CrossWorlds is better for race variety and tuning

Travel Rings change the race as it unfolds

SEGA describes a three-lap format in which a Travel Ring sends racers to a CrossWorld during lap two. The final lap returns to the original course, but with changed shortcuts, obstacles, items, and possible Frenzy gates. Nintendo’s listing identifies 24 tracks and 15 CrossWorlds. That structure gives a race a deliberate shift in setting and route rather than keeping every lap on an unchanged circuit. Nintendo’s CrossWorlds listing and SEGA’s official CrossWorlds page describe the game’s tracks and mechanics.

Gadgets add meaningful vehicle experimentation

Nintendo lists 45 original vehicles and 70 gadgets for CrossWorlds. SEGA says gadgets have distinct effects and are unlocked through play. That gives players concrete ways to tune a setup and experiment with how it behaves. These counts describe CrossWorlds alone; they are not a direct numerical comparison with Mario Kart World.

It is easier to choose for the hardware you own

SEGA lists CrossWorlds for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games. Its official page lists the Switch 2 release as December 4, 2025, and says physical Switch 2 copies are available from March 26, 2026. Confirm platform and current availability when buying: a copy for one system is not a universal edition. SEGA’s platform and release information has the specific details.

Where Mario Kart World may be the better pick

Free Roam gives exploration a central role

Nintendo describes Mario Kart World as a connected world with a Free Roam mode for exploring courses and discovering surprises. Its highlighted movement includes riding rails, jumping off walls, and skimming across water. If roaming between areas is part of what you want from a kart racer, this is a real strength, not a minor extra. Nintendo’s Mario Kart World page outlines its world and modes.

It has the larger listed online field

Nintendo lists Mario Kart World for up to 24 online players, compared with up to 12 for CrossWorlds. Both games’ Nintendo listings show local wireless play for 2–8 players, so the clearest listed player-count difference is online. Mario Kart World is the better fit if maximizing the size of an online race matters most.

Its post-launch update adds courses and routes

As of Nintendo’s product-page information dated September 9, 2026, Mario Kart World has an update adding SNES courses and Knockout Tour routes. That is a dated update note, not a guarantee that the listed content or future updates remain unchanged; check the game page for the current version information. Nintendo’s game page carries the update notice.

What reviews say about CrossWorlds’ strengths and drawbacks

Independent coverage supports CrossWorlds’ appeal without making it an uncontested winner. PC Gamer’s Mollie Taylor praised the racing, route experimentation, and customization in a review published January 16, 2026, while criticizing item balance, online match errors, and some transitions between regular tracks and CrossWorlds. Those are observations about the PC review and its version, not a claim about every platform’s current performance. PC Gamer’s review gives its assessment.

In a hands-on comparison updated December 24, 2025, Tom’s Guide author Nikita Achanta favored CrossWorlds for gameplay and customization, described its NPC difficulty as punishing, and outlined Mario Kart World’s 24-player Knockout Tour. That is a subjective Switch 2 comparison, not a controlled test or a consensus verdict. Tom’s Guide’s comparison explains that author’s view.

Is Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds better than Mario Kart World?

For a player who values mid-race course changes, tuning with gadgets, and platform choice, yes: CrossWorlds is the better recommendation. For someone drawn to open-ended exploration or the highest listed online player cap, Mario Kart World has the more relevant advantages. SEGA reported that CrossWorlds had sold over 1 million units worldwide since its September 2025 release, as of October 23, 2025; that is a dated publisher-reported figure, not a current sales total or a comparison with Mario Kart World. SEGA’s October 23, 2025 announcement provides the sales figure.
