Valve’s offer to get the original Half-Life free on Steam was a limited anniversary-weekend promotion announced on November 17, 2023—not an offer confirmed to be active today. Valve said players could claim the game during that weekend and keep it. Its announcement does not establish the game’s current price or availability in any region, so check the live Steam listing before buying or claiming it.
When was the original Half-Life free on Steam?
Valve announced the giveaway on November 17, 2023, as part of the game’s 25th anniversary. The promotion was for that anniversary weekend; the announcement’s “grab it now and keep it forever” wording described the offer at the time, not a permanent free-to-play release. Valve dates the game’s original launch to November 19, 1998. Valve’s anniversary announcement does not state the current Steam price or regional availability.
Valve also announced discounts on the Half-Life franchise during the same promotion. Those were part of the 2023 event and are not evidence of a current discount.

Can you use the older build for GoldSrc mods?
Valve said some GoldSrc mods could have compatibility issues with the updated version. It archived the pre-anniversary build in the public Steam beta branch named steam_legacy and advised using that branch for mods while compatibility work continued.
If a mod stops working after the anniversary update, the legacy branch is the version Valve identified for that purpose. The announcement does not promise that every mod will work there; compatibility depends on the individual mod.

What the anniversary announcement does—and does not—confirm
The announcement documents a specific free weekend in November 2023, the contents of that update, and the availability of the earlier build through a Steam beta branch. It does not confirm whether Half-Life is free now, give a current price, or list availability by country. For those details, use the game’s live Steam store page rather than relying on the anniversary promotion.
