How to use these hints
Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four based on a shared connection. The New York Times says each group is color-coded from yellow (easiest) to purple (trickiest), and that each puzzle has one solution. Since words can appear to fit more than one category, look for the connection that accounts for all four words.
Try each hint before moving to the next. The categories progress from a broad nudge to a near-direct clue.
- Hint 1: Think of a strong, steady sound, sensation, or vibration.
- Hint 2: One group is connected to geographical features.
- Hint 3: Another group contains items used for a particular household project.
- Hint 4: The last group’s words can each follow the same four-letter noun: a body part at the lower end of the leg.

Stop here if you do not want the solution revealed. The four categories and their words are:
#1 Best Overall
| Category | Words | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| THROB | BEAT, POUND, PULSE, THUMP | Words for a strong or steady beat or throb. |
| LANDFORMS | CAPE, CRATER, GORGE, RIDGE | Geographical features. |
| PICTURE HANGING NEEDS | HAMMER, HANGER, LEVEL, NAIL | Tools or supplies used to hang a picture. |
| FOOT___ | BALL, HILLS, LOCKER, PRINT | Add each word after FOOT to make FOOTBALL, FOOTHILLS, FOOTLOCKER, and FOOTPRINT. |
Why the final group is easy to miss
The FOOT___ set is a word-completion category rather than a list of four items that are obviously alike on their own. Reading each word after FOOT reveals the shared pattern: BALL, HILLS, LOCKER, and PRINT complete four familiar words. The other sets rely on more direct meaning-based connections.
