Steam players should check Steam’s controller configuration, disconnect other USB devices, and test a wired connection. For a DualSense controller on Steam or Epic Games Launcher, update its software, restart the PC, and reconnect it.
1. Check whether your controller is supported on PC
Rocket League Support lists these supported PC controllers: DualShock 4 (PS4), DualSense (PS5), Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam Controller. That list does not confirm compatibility for every third-party controller.
If your model is listed, continue with the steps below. If it is not, the official list does not establish that Rocket League will detect it.
2. If you play through Steam, check its controller configuration
Rocket League Support says detection or button issues—especially with PS4 controllers—can occur when PlayStation configuration support is enabled. Steam’s configuration settings can change whether Steam or Rocket League handles controller input. Check one configuration change at a time so you can tell whether it affects detection.

- In Steam, open Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings. If your Steam client uses different labels, look for the equivalent controller configuration settings.
- Uncheck PlayStation Configuration Support and Xbox Configuration Support.
- Return to save the changes, close Steam, and restart the PC.
- Launch Steam and Rocket League, then check whether the controller is detected.
Rocket League Support also points to enabling controller support in Big Picture Mode when the controller is not detected or the game shows the wrong button prompts. If you try that option, check the result before changing other controller modes.
3. Remove possible USB conflicts and connect before launch
Other USB devices—particularly flightsticks and HOTAS equipment—can be mistaken for controllers. Disconnect other USB devices, connect the controller you want to use, and then launch Rocket League. Connecting the controller while the game is starting can cause detection issues, according to Rocket League Support’s Steam troubleshooting guide.

4. Try a wired USB connection
For Steam troubleshooting, Rocket League Support recommends USB. Its Steam guidance says Bluetooth is not officially supported for Rocket League on Steam and may not work with certain controller models and types. This is Steam-specific guidance, not a universal statement about every platform or controller.
DualSense has a separate PC support path: Rocket League Support says to reconnect it by USB or Bluetooth after updating its software and restarting the PC. Follow that model-specific guidance if you use a DualSense.

5. Reinstall the controller driver through Device Manager
For the Steam troubleshooting path, Rocket League Support recommends uninstalling the controller device in Windows Device Manager so Windows can reinstall its driver.
- Open Device Manager in Windows and locate the controller.
- Uninstall the controller device.
- Restart the PC with the controller plugged in so Windows can reinstall the driver.
- Open Rocket League and check whether it detects the controller.
This is a recommended troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.

6. Use the DualSense steps on Steam or Epic Games Launcher
If a DualSense is not working in Rocket League on PC through either Steam or Epic Games Launcher, Rocket League Support gives this sequence:
- Update the controller software.
- Disconnect the controller from the PC.
- Restart the PC.
- Reconnect the controller by USB or Bluetooth.
If it still does not work, Rocket League Support directs players to PlayStation controller support.

7. Reset a DualShock 4 if you use that model
This reset applies to the DualShock 4 only. Rocket League Support says to find the small reset button on the back of the controller near L2, press it with an unfolded paper clip or similar item for roughly 3–5 seconds, and reconnect the controller to the PC over USB. Do not use this instruction for other controller models.

- Confirm that the model is on Rocket League’s supported PC list.
- If you use Steam, check its controller configuration and test the recommended USB connection.
- Disconnect other USB devices and connect the controller before launching the game.
- Try the Device Manager driver reinstall step.
- If you use a DualSense, follow its update-and-restart sequence; if you use a DualShock 4, use only its model-specific reset step.
