Minecraft Java snapshot 24w13a, published March 27, 2024, added an optional, harder Trial Chamber challenge: carry Bad Omen near an eligible Trial Spawner and it becomes Trial Omen, starting an Ominous Trial. Defeat the upgraded encounter for a chance at an Ominous Trial Key, then use that key on an Ominous Vault for a separate, more valuable reward pool. This is a historical 2024 snapshot explainer, not a description of the current Minecraft version.
What changed in snapshot 24w13a?
The Java Edition snapshot introduced Ominous Events, including Ominous Trials and Ominous Vaults. The official notes described them as “optional experiences accessed through Bad Omen.” The update also redesigned Bad Omen: rather than immediately starting a raid when a player enters a village, it becomes Raid Omen for 30 seconds, after which a raid begins at the location where the player gained the effect. How to start an Ominous Trial
- Get Bad Omen. In this snapshot, consuming an Ominous Bottle grants Bad Omen. Bottles last 1 hour 40 minutes, have five levels, break when consumed, stack to 64, and may be found in standard Vaults or dropped by Raid Captains defeated outside a raid.
- Enter a Trial Chamber. When you come within detection range of a Trial Spawner that is not already Ominous, Bad Omen transforms into Trial Omen. Its duration is 15 minutes multiplied by the transformed Bad Omen level.
- Fight the Ominous Trial Spawner. The spawner turns blue and emits soul flames. It can create more challenging encounters, including equipped mobs and projectiles or potions. When it becomes Ominous, its existing mobs despawn and its challenge resets; its ominous state lasts until it is defeated and its cooldown finishes.
Not every spawner is immediately eligible: the trigger described in the snapshot is proximity to a Trial Spawner that is not already Ominous.
How to get an Ominous Trial Key and open an Ominous Vault
Defeating an Ominous Trial Spawner gives it a 30% chance to eject an Ominous Trial Key in snapshot 24w13a. That replaces the usual 50% chance of a Trial Key from a regular Trial Spawner. Find an Ominous Vault elsewhere in the Trial Chamber and use the Ominous Trial Key to unlock it. The Ominous Vault has a distinct texture and soul flames, and the snapshot says these vaults are placed in harder-to-find spots.

A key is not a guaranteed drop, and an opened vault does not guarantee a particular item. The listed Ominous Vault rewards are possibilities, not a promise that every vault contains all of them.

What can an Ominous Vault contain?
The snapshot’s possible rewards include:
- Ominous Bottles III, IV, or V
- An Enchanted Golden Apple
- Flow Banner Pattern
- Flow Armor Trim Smithing Template
- Mace enchantments: Wind Burst, Breach, and Density
- A Heavy Core
The reward list distinguishes the Ominous Vault from the standard Vault. In the same snapshot, standard Vaults could contain Ominous Bottles I–II, while the Flow Banner Pattern, Flow Armor Trim, and Heavy Core were removed from their loot pool.
Other Trial Spawner changes in 24w13a
The snapshot adjusted ordinary spawner behavior as well as adding ominous content. The number of simultaneous mobs increases by 0.5 for each additional player rather than 2; the Baby Zombie baseline was reduced from 3 to 2; and a Trial Spawner requires line of sight to activate. These changes sit alongside the new Ominous Trial loop, rather than being requirements for opening an Ominous Vault.

Snapshot features and the later release
Some features in 24w13a only work in freshly generated Trial Chambers, so an older chamber may not show every change described in the snapshot. Snapshot 24w13a was an experimental Java Edition build from March 2024, not a current-version label. Mojang’s later Java Edition 1.21 (Tricky Trials) release changelog retains the Ominous Vault and Ominous Trial Key feature set as release context.
