If a DualSense button feels unusually soft, sticky, or unresponsive, try a careful exterior wipe, then reset the controller and check its software. These steps may help with surface grime or a connection or software issue, but they cannot confirm or repair a mechanical fault. If the button still feels wrong, stop and contact PlayStation Repairs rather than opening the controller.
1. Wipe the controller’s exterior carefully
Sony’s instruction manual says to “Wipe with a soft, dry cloth.” Use it gently on the controller’s exterior, including around the affected button. Do not press hard or try to force the button to move.
Sony also says, “Do not use solvents or other chemicals. Do not wipe with a chemically-treated cleaning cloth.” Keep liquid and foreign objects out of the controller: do not spray cleaner into button gaps or insert a pin, pick, or other tool around a button. 2. Reset the DualSense and check its software
PlayStation’s controller support page includes a reset procedure and instructions for checking controller device software. These are general troubleshooting steps; Sony does not say that a reset fixes a mechanically mushy button.

- On the back of the controller, press the small reset button with a pin or similar tool.
- Reconnect the controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- On the PS5, check for DualSense device software at Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
Follow the current on-screen instructions if an update is offered. If the button remains soft or unresponsive afterward, treat that as a persistent physical symptom rather than repeating resets in expectation of a mechanical repair. PlayStation controller support

3. Seek service if the button still feels wrong
If the symptom persists after these basic steps, PlayStation directs users to PlayStation Repairs. Dirt, wear, liquid exposure, or component damage could be possibilities, but the cited official material does not identify the cause of a mushy-feeling button or provide a button-specific internal repair procedure.
Check the warranty terms for your controller’s model and region before opening it or paying for service. Sony’s CFI-ZCT1W manual describes a one-year limited warranty for original purchasers in the United States and Canada, subject to conditions and proof-of-purchase requirements; that period should not be assumed to apply to every region or controller revision.
