A Way Out is a two-player co-op game. To play online, both players need an EA Account and a persistent internet connection, and they must use the same type of platform. One player can own the game and invite the other through the free Friend Pass trial.
What you need to play online
- Two players: A Way Out is co-op only.
- An EA Account and persistent internet access for each player.
- The same platform type for both players: PC, PlayStation, or Xbox. EA does not list cross-platform Friend Pass invitations.
- One player with the full game. The invited player can join using the free Friend Pass trial.
EA lists the game for the EA app on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox. Check the official A Way Out product page for its platform and PC requirements.

How to invite a friend with Friend Pass
- Check platform compatibility. Both players must be on the same type of platform; for example, a PC player should invite another PC player, not a console player.
- Have the host open the full game. The host must own A Way Out. Both players need EA Accounts and persistent internet access.
- Send the invitation. From the game’s main menu, the host invites the friend using the device’s friends list.
- Install Friend Pass if needed. The invited friend can find A Way Out in the relevant EA app, PlayStation, or Xbox store and download the free trial. EA says this download is the same size as the full game.
- Accept the invitation and join. Once the friend accepts, both players can play the full co-op experience.

Console online membership requirements
For Friend Pass online play on console, EA’s support instructions require both players to have the applicable active online membership: PlayStation Plus on PlayStation or Xbox Game Pass Core on Xbox.

PC controller requirement
EA’s PC system requirements list at least one Xbox-compatible or PlayStation-compatible controller as an input requirement. The requirement names compatible controller types, not a particular brand or model.
Friend Pass restrictions to know
- Same platform type only: EA limits Friend Pass invitations to friends on the same type of platform, so do not expect PC-to-console or PlayStation-to-Xbox online play.
- Germany: EA says the Friend Pass trial is unavailable in Germany.
- Trial achievements: Achievements earned by a player using the trial will not unlock or be awarded until that player buys the full version.
If an invitation does not work
Check that both players are on the same platform type, that the invited player has installed the Friend Pass trial, and, on console, that both players have the required active membership. EA’s instructions do not specify every account-linking or network fix. For other invitation problems, use the EA Friend Pass support page or EA’s A Way Out support options rather than changing unverified network settings.
