These semicolon commands are Bedrock syntax. For Java WorldEdit, the official 7.4 documentation does not list a built-in gradient pattern; you can approximate a directional transition by setting successive bands to different block patterns.
Make a gradient in WorldEdit for Bedrock
First select the area you want to edit using the selection tools available in your installation. Then create a gradient ID with the blocks listed in the order you want them to transition, and apply it to the selection:

;gradient create nature stone dirt grass;set $nature
The first command creates a gradient named nature from stone through dirt to grass. The second applies that named pattern to the selected region. See the WorldEdit for Bedrock Patterns guide for gradient syntax and options.
Control the Bedrock gradient’s shape and transition
Use the selection as the gradient map
To create a gradient based on the selection’s shape, use ;gradient create -s "name". The selection is read along its longest side as the gradient map.

Make the transition softer or sharper
The -f option controls how much the patterns fade into one another. For example, ;gradient create -f 0 test stone dirt creates a hard transition between stone and dirt.
Choose a direction or center
- Append a dot and an absolute direction to the pattern, such as
$nature.north. The guide supports absolute directions, notleft, right, forward, orback. - Use
$nature.radfor a gradient that runs from the operation’s center toward its boundary. - Use
$nature.litto start the gradient from the player’s position rather than the operation’s center.
List or remove gradients
Use ;gradient list to view created gradients and ;gradient delete "id" to remove one. Creating a gradient with an existing ID overwrites it.

Does the gradient command work in Java WorldEdit?
Do not assume the Bedrock ;gradient command works in Java. The official WorldEdit 7.4 pattern reference documents patterns for //set, including single blocks, random and weighted choices, but does not document a built-in gradient pattern. The reference notes that its list may be incomplete and that plugins can register additional patterns, so a particular Java installation may have plugin-provided options.
Build a directional gradient with Java bands
For a staged transition in Java, divide the area into adjacent bands and set each band to a different block or palette mixture. Narrower bands can make the progression appear more gradual; wider bands make the change more abrupt. This is a manual technique rather than a documented built-in gradient command.

Java //set accepts patterns. For example:
//set stone, diorite, andesitechooses among those block types.//set 70%stone,30%dioriteweights the choices toward stone.
These patterns distribute block choices; they do not produce a directional gradient by themselves. The Java WorldEdit command reference documents the command syntax.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check your edition and permissions if a command fails
Semicolon commands such as ;set are the syntax used in the cited Bedrock WorldEdit references; Java examples use double slashes such as //set. A command denied by a server may require permissions: the Bedrock command reference lists worldedit.generation.gradient for gradient management and worldedit.region.set for setting a selected region. If an option is rejected, check the documentation for the WorldEdit version installed on your server or game, since command syntax can change.
