What melonDS’s GBA support actually does
The melonDS DS project says it can load a GBA ROM and save data for Slot-2 connectivity. Some DS games use a GBA cartridge or its save data as an accessory or source of extra content. Loading those files lets a compatible DS game use that connection; it does not run the GBA title. See the melonDS DS README for the project’s description.

This is different from playing a GBA game on original Nintendo DS hardware: Nintendo says the DS and DS Lite can play GBA games in single-player mode, but not GBA multiplayer, original Game Boy, or Game Boy Color games. Load a GBA ROM for a DS game in RetroArch
The documented procedure is for the melonDS DS core in RetroArch, and is intended for Slot-2 connectivity. The project’s instructions are:

- The DS Lite system is a region free device, it can plays all Nintendo DS Lite games and Gameboy Advance Games
- Load the melonDS DS core.
- Open Subsystems and select Load Slot 1 & 2 Boot.
- Select a Nintendo DS ROM first, a GBA ROM second, and, if needed, a GBA save file third.
- Start the game. The selected combination is added to RetroArch history.
Native BIOS files are not required for this documented GBA connectivity workflow. DSi mode has separate system-file requirements; consult the melonDS DS README for its setup details.
Scope of these instructions
These menu names and steps apply to the melonDS DS RetroArch core. They may not match standalone melonDS, a different libretro core, another frontend, or a later version. The standalone melonDS FAQ covers BIOS and firmware configuration for that emulator.
Use a GBA emulator to play GBA games
For GBA gameplay, install a dedicated GBA emulator. The mGBA project describes mGBA as software for running GBA games and lists support for Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, Wii, and PlayStation Vita. Check its current downloads and platform notes to confirm availability and setup for your device.

The melonDS DS changelog lists version 1.4.0, dated 2026-09-27, as adding an Auto console mode that selects DSi mode for games that need it and DS mode for other games. That entry does not add GBA gameplay. See the melonDS DS changelog.
