Ride or walk to objectives, gather and explore along the way, use relevant dialogue options, craft or repair useful gear, and fight with the weapons you intend to use. Books and trainers can target skills that lag behind. You do not need to max every category to finish the story; prioritize what supports your build and preferred quest approaches.
How skill and stat progression works
KCD2 uses activity-linked progression: using a sword trains Swords, brewing trains Alchemy, and reading or discovering information supports Scholarship. Experience is not one shared pool that raises every category together. Quests can also contribute to skills or overall progression, while books and paid lessons offer more targeted training. The Player menu shows your categories and their available perk points; points belong to their relevant trees rather than being freely assigned across all skills.

Main Level reflects broader progress, including main stats and quests, rather than one repeatable training action. A current KCD2.org guide updated August 31, 2026, reports a usual permanent level cap of 30 for skills and main stats. Temporary effects from equipment, perks, or potions can make a value appear higher for a check; treat that reported cap as a guide description, not an official mechanics specification.
A useful leveling loop that fits normal play
- Travel manually when you want travel-related progress. Ride or walk to a quest rather than relying only on fast travel. Gather herbs and investigate points of interest along the route.
- Use ordinary interactions for social progress. Choose relevant new dialogue options, take checks that suit the conversation, and haggle when making a real purchase.
- Fit in useful crafting and maintenance. Brew potions you can use, forge items when they serve a purpose, and sharpen or repair equipment.
- Take combat or horse activities that fit your build. Use the weapon category you want to develop, and enter an archery or horse event when convenient.
- Read a new book before resting. Books can give targeted experience and help address a category that is behind.
This combines several kinds of progress while advancing quests. Focused repetition can still make sense when you need a particular level for a weapon, perk, or quest approach, but it is not automatically better than actions that also provide useful items or move the story forward.

Travel round the land engaging in unique activities, such as blacksmithing and archery, to truly immerse yourself in this vibrant region of Europe that will remember your actions, forever.

How to raise each main stat
Strength
Fight with strength-oriented melee weapons. One route described by guides is walking while overencumbered, which may also train Vitality, but it can be slow and inconvenient. It is optional—not a necessary replacement for purposeful travel or combat.
Agility
Use agility-oriented weapons, dodge, and practice stealth or ranged actions. The PowerPyx guide from February 3, 2025, also lists pickpocket attempts as an Agility route; pickpocketing is a criminal choice with possible consequences, not a risk-free training method.
Vitality
Run, climb, and survive combat. Some guides also report Vitality gains from walking while overencumbered. Consider that only if the inconvenience fits your session; the available guides do not establish a reliable XP rate for it.
Speech
Talk to people, select relevant dialogue choices, attempt suitable checks, and haggle during purchases. You do not need to provoke every possible check or make every conversation a leveling exercise; use opportunities that fit the situation.
Main Level
Progress quests and develop your main stats. Main Level is an overall progression result, not a skill with a single repeatable action that reliably raises it by itself.
How to raise crafting, knowledge, travel, and companion skills
Alchemy
Brew potions. Marigold Potion is one repeatable example in the older Method guide, while the August 2026 KCD2.org guide recommends making useful, low-cost potions. Exact best recipes and patch-specific XP rates are not established here, so choose recipes that make sense for your supplies and needs.
Craftsmanship
Forge, sharpen, repair, and maintain equipment. Making something useful can pair skill progress with equipment or resale value; repeated crafting solely for XP may consume time and materials without serving your build.
Scholarship
Read books, pass Scholarship dialogue checks, and uncover new Codex entries. Use books or a trainer to target a lagging category or a threshold that matters to you.
Recommended Free Tools
Horsemanship
Ride manually and take part in horse events. If you are deliberately training Horsemanship, do not rely exclusively on fast travel.
Survival
Gather herbs, hunt and process animals or food, and discover points of interest. Folding these into travel makes exploration do double duty.
Houndmaster
Keep Mutt with Henry, interact with and feed him, and use his abilities. The PowerPyx guide notes that Mutt becomes available through the Mutt side quest.
Drinking
Alcohol use raises Drinking according to the consulted guides. The Method guide advises moderation to avoid becoming too drunk. This is an optional skill; drinking is not required for general progression.

How to level Stealth, Thievery, and combat skills
Stealth
Sneak near enemies, use stealth takedowns, and practice lockpicking or pickpocketing. The current KCD2.org guide suggests legal practice chests or hostile camps as alternatives to committing crimes in town. Choose a practice setting with the level of risk you are willing to accept.
Thievery
Lockpick, pickpocket, or steal. PowerPyx’s 2025 guide says more valuable theft and harder locks yield more experience, but that is a guide-reported mechanic, not a verified current XP formula. Criminal activity can carry gameplay risks; it is not required to level the rest of your character.
Warfare
Combat broadly develops Warfare. A practice fight can build it alongside the weapon skill you use and, through combat, relevant physical stats.
Swords
Fight with the sword category you plan to use. Training a different weapon category will not substitute for using swords.
Heavy Weapons
Fight with clubs, maces, axes, or war hammers to develop Heavy Weapons.
Polearms
Use polearms such as spears, halberds, or glaives. PowerPyx also lists two-handed weapons in this category; weapon labels and progression behavior should be checked in your current game.
Unarmed
Fight with your fists to train Unarmed.
Marksmanship
Use ranged weapons. The guides recommend archery tournaments as a focused way to practice Marksmanship.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to use books, trainers, fights, or repeated practice
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Normal play and combined travel | Broad progress while completing quests and exploring | Progress depends on which activities your route naturally includes. |
| Books | Targeting a skill that is behind, especially Scholarship | You need access to an appropriate book and time to read it. |
| Trainer lessons | Reaching a specific threshold without repeating an activity | Lessons cost groschen; weigh the level or unlock against other needs. |
| Practice fights or contests | Focused combat, weapon, or ranged practice | They take time and may involve payment or other requirements. |
| Crime or overencumbered travel | Players who accept the associated risks or inconvenience | Crime can have consequences, while carrying too much may make movement cumbersome. Reported gains and rates are not established as reliable across current patches. |
For paid courses, compare the threshold you need—such as a weapon requirement, perk, or quest option—with the groschen you may need for equipment and supplies. Use repetition when it solves a specific problem, not simply because a guide labels it the fastest route.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Using Henry’s-quality Fox for a focused training window
The KCD2.org guide updated August 31, 2026, reports that Henry’s-quality Fox grants “50% more experience for two in-game days” and requires Alchemy 16 plus the Secret of Secrets perk. This is a guide-reported boost, not an independently verified official mechanic. If you have it, prepare useful training activities, books, crafting, contests, and manual travel before activating it; spending most of the window in menus or sleeping leaves less time for actions that can earn experience.
What to prioritize—and what not to grind
Choose skills that support your weapons, preferred stealth or social approach, and the quest solutions you want available. If a specific perk or check is your goal, identify its relevant category in the Player menu and train that category directly; use a book or trainer if ordinary play is not getting you there quickly enough. Leveling every tree is optional, and there is no universal fastest route for every build.
The guides consulted were published or updated between February 2025 and August 2026. They describe the progression routes above, but patch-specific XP rates were not independently verified. Older anecdotes about unusually heavy carrying or large level jumps should not be treated as repeatable speed benchmarks.
