To rebuild a PS5 database, start the console in Safe Mode and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. PlayStation says this scans the drive and creates a new database of the system’s content. It is a troubleshooting step—not the same as resetting the console or reinstalling system software.
When to rebuild the PS5 database
PlayStation identifies Rebuild Database as an option for certain system-feature problems and for a game icon that remains on the Home screen after the game has been deleted. It also appears in PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance for some game-launch problems, disc-reading problems, and system or application data errors. The right sequence depends on the symptom or error code; rebuilding is not a guaranteed fix.
- PlayStation Safe Mode guide: system-feature issues or a deleted game icon still appearing on Home.
- Game-launch troubleshooting: includes Clear Cache and Rebuild Database among the steps for some launch problems.
- Disc troubleshooting: includes Clear Cache and Rebuild Database among steps for reading problems.
- CE-108262-9 guidance: places Rebuild Database in a sequence of checks for some system or application data errors.
How to rebuild the database
- Turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for three seconds. Wait for the power indicator to turn off.
- With the console off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep; PlayStation says the second beep sounds seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- In Safe Mode, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then select Rebuild Database.
- Allow the console to complete the operation. PlayStation’s guide does not state a fixed completion time.
These steps and menu labels are from PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide. It says to connect the controller by USB but does not specify a cable type or say whether a charging-only cable will work.
What Rebuild Database does—and what it does not do
PlayStation describes the option as scanning the drive and creating a new database of all content on the system. The Safe Mode guide presents it separately from the reset options. It does not describe Rebuild Database as a factory reset or system-software reinstall, so do not select one of those options by mistake.

| Safe Mode option | What PlayStation says it does | Data impact stated in the guide |
|---|---|---|
| Rebuild Database | Scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. | The guide describes a scan and database recreation; it does not list this as a user-data-deleting reset. |
| Clear System Software Cache | A separate option suggested for system-feature issues or performance drops. | Not stated as a data-deleting reset in the guide. |
| Reset PS5 | Resets the console. | Deletes user data. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Resets the console and reinstalls system software. | Deletes user data and removes PS5 system software. |
The reset impacts above are stated in PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide. Sony warns that some Safe Mode options result in data loss, so check the exact option name before confirming.

Use the PlayStation troubleshooting page for the specific symptom or error code and follow its remaining steps. For CE-108262-9, for example, Sony’s UK guidance places rebuilding after software-update and reinstall checks, with reset as a later step if the issue continues. That reset deletes data saved on console storage, so treat it as a separate, more destructive action—not as another name for rebuilding.
