The pass is a free download, not an independent full-game license.
What can you play for free?

How Friend’s Pass works
Download Friend’s Pass from the store for your platform. If neither player owns the full game, you can play only the first chapter as a trial. If one player owns the full game, that player invites the other to join the co-op session, and the guest can play the full adventure through Friend’s Pass. The guest does not get a separate license to launch and host the full game independently.

EA lists Friend’s Pass downloads through the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam Store and EA app. Its support article also says the first chapter is playable locally or online and that one of the two players needs the full version to proceed beyond it. Store names, requirements and availability may differ by region.
Does “free” include online play?
Not necessarily. Friend’s Pass removes the need for the guest to buy the game when joining an owner, but online multiplayer may still require a paid platform membership. EA’s support page lists Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass among the online subscription requirements; check the localized requirement for your platform and market.

PlayStation
PlayStation’s FAQ says couch co-op works offline without an internet connection. For online co-op, both players need PlayStation Plus. Friend’s Pass supports cross-generation play on PlayStation, but not cross-platform play between PlayStation and other platforms.
Steam
For It Takes Two through Steam, EA says the EA app launcher is no longer required, but an EA account is still needed to connect to EA servers for online play. EA also distinguishes the newer Steam Friend’s Pass from the older EA app version. See EA’s Steam and Friend’s Pass support details.

Check platform compatibility before inviting a friend
Cross-play depends on the platforms involved, so two players should confirm their exact pairing before downloading. EA’s support page lists Friend’s Pass cross-play among Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS4, PS5 and Switch 2, while PlayStation’s own FAQ says PlayStation Friend’s Pass supports cross-generation play but not cross-platform play. For the original Nintendo Switch, EA lists narrower pairings, including local GameShare with Switch 2 and online play with Switch 2 after changing to the free Switch 2 edition. Consult EA’s platform-specific guidance for the pairing you plan to use.
As of October 8, 2026, the Switch 2 version had not launched. EA announced a launch on October 15, 2026, in most regions and October 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, with cross-platform play for that version. EA also says existing Nintendo Switch owners can update to the Switch 2 version for free, subject to regional and account conditions; the announcement notes a small price exception for Japan. Those announced features should not be treated as available before the launch date. Details are in EA’s September 9, 2026 announcement.

Which option makes sense?
- You only want to try the game: Download Friend’s Pass and play the first chapter without a host.
- Your co-op partner already owns it: Use Friend’s Pass to join them; check online membership and platform compatibility first.
- You want to host or play beyond the trial without an owner friend: Get the full game, or check whether it is currently included with an eligible subscription on your platform and in your region.
EA’s US PlayStation listing is evidence of EA Play availability on that storefront, not a guarantee the game is included in every EA Play catalog. Membership pricing and catalog inclusion can change, so verify both before subscribing.
