The Field Backpack is the best pick when you want the most listed storage: the DayZ Wiki.gg comparison gives it 64 inventory slots. If you prioritize a lighter load or wet-weather handling, the Drybag Backpack is a stronger fit; for a middle ground, the Mountain, Tactical, and Combat backpacks each list 56 slots, but differ in weight and insulation. These are in-game inventory slots, not real-world volume.
How to choose a DayZ backpack
Backpacks expand a survivor’s inventory in DayZ Standalone. The community-maintained DayZ Wiki.gg reference notes that inventory capacities were reduced in update 1.26, so treat the figures below as source-listed values and check the current game version if precision matters.
Choose based on the trade-off you actually care about: slot capacity, the pack’s listed weight, its wetness and insulation values, and whether its profile suits your playstyle. A high slot count does not automatically make a pack the best choice for every survivor.
DayZ backpack comparison
| Backpack | Capacity | Listed weight | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Field Backpack | 64 slots | 1.6 kg | Largest capacity in the cited category comparison. |
| Mountain Backpack | 56 slots | 2.3 kg | Its in-game description says “Spacious but sort of noticeable.” This is a description, not a measured visibility penalty. |
| Tactical Backpack | 56 slots | 2.6 kg | Same listed capacity as the Mountain Backpack; the comparison gives it a different insulation listing. |
| Combat Backpack | 56 slots | 2.1 kg | Same listed capacity as the Mountain Backpack; the comparison gives it a different insulation listing. |
| Drybag Backpack | 42 slots | 600 g | Its item page describes it as waterproof; the category table lists lower maximum wetness than many backpacks. |
| Assault Backpack | 36 slots | 900 g | Lower capacity than the 56-slot examples, with a lower listed weight. |
Capacity, weight, wetness, and insulation values above are listed by DayZ Wiki.gg; the comparison does not quantify visibility effects. Exact spawn locations and availability can vary with game version, map, and server rules.

Which DayZ backpack holds the most?
The Field Backpack tops this comparison at 64 slots. It is the clearest choice when maximizing inventory space is your priority, with a listed weight of 1.6 kg. The slot total describes the in-game inventory grid; it should not be read as a physical-volume measurement.
Which backpack is best for a lighter load or rain?
The Drybag Backpack is the lightest of the options shown at 600 g, with 42 slots. Its item page calls it waterproof, and the category comparison lists a lower maximum wetness value than many backpacks. It trades storage for that lighter weight and wet-weather distinction.

Which 56-slot backpack should you choose?
Mountain, Tactical, and Combat backpacks all list 56 slots, so the choice comes down to their other listed characteristics and your preferences. The Mountain weighs 2.3 kg and carries the description “Spacious but sort of noticeable.” The Tactical is listed at 2.6 kg and the Combat at 2.1 kg; the category comparison also differentiates them by insulation. The source does not establish a measured gameplay visibility penalty for the Mountain pack.
Is the Assault Backpack worth choosing?
The Assault Backpack lists 36 slots and weighs 900 g. It is a lower-capacity option than the 56-slot packs, but its listed weight is also below those examples. Consider it when you want a smaller pack rather than choosing solely by maximum storage.

What about the Utility Buttpack?
The Utility Buttpack is a separate inventory option, not a backpack competing for the back slot. DayZ Wiki.gg says it attaches to an Assault Vest without occupying that slot, making it relevant if you want to add storage while keeping your backpack choice separate.
