No—not officially. Insiders have claimed that a next-generation version of Red Dead Redemption 2 exists or that developers worked on one, but the cited Rockstar and Take-Two materials do not announce an upgrade or give it a release date. The PS4 and Xbox One versions can already be played on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility; that is not the same as a native current-generation edition.
What has actually been confirmed?
Rockstar’s backward-compatibility announcement says the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Red Dead Redemption 2 are playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It documents compatibility with the older releases, not a separate native version for current-generation consoles. Rockstar’s announcement.

Take-Two’s 2026 investor presentation lists Red Dead Redemption 2 at over 85 million units sold-in and the Red Dead Redemption series at nearly 115 million sold-in. The presentation also says the original Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare arrived on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 in December 2025. It does not announce an RDR2 upgrade. These are publisher-reported sold-in figures, not consumer-sales totals; the presentation does not give an exact measurement date alongside each figure. Take-Two’s 2026 investor presentation.
What have insiders said about an RDR2 upgrade?
NateTheHate
RDR2.org reported that insider NateTheHate said an upgrade existed, while also saying he had no update on release timing: “Yes, they exist. I have no update on timing for release.” That is a reported insider statement, not confirmation from Rockstar or Take-Two. RDR2.org’s report.

Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly
ComicBook.com reported Reilly saying he knew developers who had worked on an RDR2 next-gen project. In the reported comments, he said, “I can tell you 100% I know 8 devs that worked on RDR2 next gen,” and added that Rockstar decides what to do about release dates. ComicBook.com’s report.
A later report says Reilly objected to outlets presenting some details—including developer-count and timing claims—as confirmed, explaining that some were educated guesses. That qualification makes a specific rumored year unsuitable as a firm release schedule. Gamingbible’s follow-up report.

Why the original Red Dead Redemption causes confusion
The original Red Dead Redemption is a different game from Red Dead Redemption 2. Take-Two says the original and Undead Nightmare came to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 in December 2025. Rockstar’s update notes for that original game also document a 60 FPS option on PS5 through backward compatibility. Neither item establishes a current-generation release for RDR2. | Game | Current-generation status in the cited information | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption | Released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 in December 2025, according to Take-Two; Rockstar notes a 60 FPS option on PS5 via backward compatibility. | A newer-platform release for the original game; not an RDR2 upgrade. |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | PS4 and Xbox One versions are playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility, according to Rockstar. | The cited evidence does not document a separate native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition. |
Can you play RDR2 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S now?
Yes. Use the PS4 version on PS5 or the Xbox One version on Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility, as Rockstar describes. If buying a copy, treat it as the PS4 or Xbox One game—not as a separately announced native PS5 or Series X|S edition. The cited information does not establish that a future upgrade will arrive.
