To get the Ice Staff on The Tomb, collect the Monocle, Head Piece, and Staff Piece, then build and defend the staff in the Dark Aether Nexus. To upgrade it into Ull’s Arrow, freeze three Dark Aether Lanterns in different areas within 10 seconds, solve the randomized glyph door, and escort a charged purple orb to the Nexus center.
What you need before starting
The Staff of Ice is The Tomb’s map-specific Wonder Weapon, according to the official Call of Duty guide. Its parts and upgrade steps are earned through the map’s objectives; it is not a separate item to purchase.

You can build the staff without weapon upgrades, but Activision describes the ritual as difficult. The official guide suggests taking a main weapon to at least Pack-a-Punch level one and Rare (blue) rarity, and says Jugger-Nog and Speed Cola may help you survive. These are recommendations, not requirements. Before moving lanterns, inspect the area so you can identify the rune objective they illuminate.
Collect the three Staff of Ice parts
The parts are the Monocle, Head Piece, and Staff Piece. The Call of Duty: Zombies Guides walkthrough says the Monocle drops from a Shock Mimic spawned at Round 8. The other two parts come from separate lantern, Roman numeral, and lockdown sequences.

Get the Monocle
- Reach Round 8 and defeat the Shock Mimic that spawns. Collect the Monocle it drops.
Get the Head Piece in the Neolithic Catacombs
- Enter the Dark Aether Nexus at least once.
- Go to the Neolithic Catacombs and move a Dark Aether Lantern so its light reveals the Roman numeral symbols.
- Shoot the symbols in their displayed order.
- Complete the purple-wisp lockdown sequence that follows to earn the Head Piece.
Get the Staff Piece in the Tombs
- In the Tombs, move a Dark Aether Lantern to reveal the Roman numerals on the bull-wall sequence.
- Shoot the numerals in order, then complete the resulting purple-wisp lockdown to earn the Staff Piece.
Build and defend the staff
- Bring the Monocle, Head Piece, and Staff Piece to the central structure in the Dark Aether Nexus.
- Interact with the structure to begin the construction lockdown.
- Defend the staff until construction finishes. Prioritize enemies with purple eyes and smoke, which target the staff, and watch for Parasites while dealing with the rest of the horde.
- When construction is complete, interact with the structure again to collect the Staff of Ice.
If the defense fails, the walkthrough says you can try again in a later round.
Upgrade the Ice Staff into Ull’s Arrow
Freeze three lanterns within 10 seconds
With the staff equipped, freeze three Dark Aether Lanterns in three different map areas within 10 seconds. The walkthrough recommends shooting the lanterns with a bullet weapon first to move them into convenient positions, then using the staff to freeze them in quick succession. The requirement is three distinct areas; choose a route that lets you reach all three before the timer expires.

Read the glyphs and open the correct gateway
- Return to the Dark Aether Nexus and shoot the three floating rocks displaying symbols. They lower so you can read their glyphs. Eight rocks can potentially display symbols, but only three are marked in a given game.
- Leave through a gateway and check the Nexus gateways around the map until you find the one blocked by a door showing symbols.
- Shoot the three glyphs on the door that match the ones you recorded from the rocks. The matching glyphs can be entered in any order, according to Gameranx’s walkthrough.
Do not guess at the symbols: the independent walkthrough warns that shooting the wrong glyphs drops the platform and can kill you. It says another attempt is possible in a later round, when a newly blocked gateway appears.
Charge and escort the orb
- Enter the reopened gateway and interact with the purple orb on the floating platform.
- Stay close as the orb travels around the Nexus, killing spawned enemies to charge it with their souls. In co-op, every player must remain relatively close; otherwise, the escort fails and must be retried in a later round.
- When the orb reaches the central structure, interact with it to absorb its power and upgrade the staff to Ull’s Arrow.
What changes after the upgrade?
Gameranx describes Ull’s Arrow as retaining the staff’s standard attack while gaining a charged ice storm. Its alternate fire, Sekhmet’s Vigor, can heal or revive players. The upgrade therefore adds both a stronger area attack and a support option, while the base staff’s construction and the upgrade’s multi-stage sequence remain separate objectives.
