What’s in the new Fallout 4 update?
Bethesda’s official patch notes date the update August 18, 2026. They do not establish that it launched on October 8, 2026, so “just got” is not supported as a claim about that date. Bethesda’s notes describe the changes, but do not state an update download size.

Mod archive limit and localization
- The BA2 archive limit increased from 256 to 1024, intended to better support larger mod collections.
- Localized strings were fixed for user-interface and platform terminology.
The archive-limit change is a technical allowance, not a promise that every mod collection will work or that performance will improve.
Creation Kit changes
The Creation Kit now supports PlayStation Creations archives containing .nif, .dds, .bink, .cdx, .csg, .wav, and .fuz files, including embedded .wav files. Its Extra Files browser allows Bink files in Creation uploads, and localization export is supported. Xbox Creation uploads can be up to 2 GB, according to Bethesda’s 2026 notes.

Bethesda also updated Search and Replace to align with Starfield and added “Select Form in Object Window” and “Open Form Editor” buttons.
Game and menu fixes
- Fixed a Steam Deck crash involving the virtual keyboard.
- Fixed a top crash caused by a streaming audio error.
- Fixed a Microsoft Store crash when entering the Creations menu after internet connectivity resumes.
- Improved returning from a Creation search page to its details page and made category ordering more consistent.
- Added Bethesda.net error codes for Customer Service and fixed Creation Kit archive, terrain, and LipGen behavior.
How do I download the Fallout 4 update?
The notes do not provide a special download link, exact platform menu path, or rollout status for an individual account. Use the update mechanism for the platform where you own and play Fallout 4, and check that platform’s game update status. The August patch is a software update; it is not a separate game purchase. Bethesda’s April 11, 2024 announcement described the then-new-generation console upgrade as free for owners of Fallout 4 on the target device, but that is distinct from this 2026 patch.
Digital copies and editions
For a digital copy, use the account and platform that owns the game and check for an available game update. Bethesda announced Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PS5, and PS4, with availability from November 10, 2025. Bethesda described it as including the base game, six official add-ons—Automatron, Far Harbor, Nuka-World, and the Workshop expansions—and more than 150 Creation Club items. Check the current store listing for edition availability and platform compatibility; the edition announcement does not change the August patch date.
Physical Xbox and PlayStation copies
Bethesda’s upgrade guidance says an Xbox One disc must be inserted in an Xbox Series X to obtain and play the eligible upgrade; the disc remains necessary to play. A PS4 disc must likewise be inserted in a PS5 and remain in the console to play. Bethesda also says the PS4 disc’s country must match the country of the user’s PlayStation Network account. Xbox Series X|S uses Smart Delivery for eligible Fallout 4 versions. These requirements concern the console upgrade, not an additional charge or separate eligibility rule stated for the August patch.

Did the Fallout 4 update expand mod storage?
Yes, Bethesda announced a separate Creations storage expansion dated May 27, 2026. Its console limits and migration behavior differ by platform. These are storage allowances for installed Creations, not the BA2 archive limit changed in August.

These figures and platform behaviors come from Bethesda’s 2026 patch notes. If you play on Xbox and find Creations missing after the storage expansion, use the saved-load-order or eligible-save method Bethesda specifies rather than assuming the content was permanently removed.
