Brandon Sanderson’s latest update on a possible Mistborn video game is modest: in his 2025 year-end post, he said he had started talking with AAA developers, but the effort was at “Step One only.” He did not name a studio or announce a contract, platform, release date, or gameplay details. The separate video game he discussed in 2021 was set in a new world, not Mistborn.
What Sanderson has said about a Mistborn game
In his 2025 State of the Sanderson, the author said, “I’ve started talking to some AAA developers.” He described the effort as “Step One only, but it’s an encouraging One.” That signals early conversations about a possible game, not a confirmed production.
Sanderson also said Mistborn video-game rights had been tied up with film rights for roughly six or seven years and that he was trying to retain control of the video-game rights. His post did not identify a developer or say that an agreement had been reached. GameSpot likewise characterized the discussions as still in the pitching stage in its January 6, 2026 report.
Was the video game Sanderson mentioned in 2021 Mistborn?
No. In December 2021, Sanderson said, “I’ve been working on a video game for several years, and I suspect it will be announced this year.” Game Informer’s report on the disclosure said the project was for a new setting rather than one of his existing properties. It is not evidence that the game was based on Mistborn.

What happened to Mistborn: Birthright?
Mistborn: Birthright was a separate proposal announced by Little Orbit and Sanderson on March 26, 2012. Sanderson’s announcement post reproduced the press release, which described an action-RPG prequel to the first Mistborn novel. The proposed protagonist was Fendin “Fiddle” Fathvell, and the planned combat centered on Allomancy, the series’ metal-based magic system.
| What the 2012 announcement proposed | Details |
|---|---|
| Format | Action-RPG prequel |
| Platforms | PlayStation, Xbox 360, Windows PC, and Mac |
| Protagonist | Fendin “Fiddle” Fathvell |
| Combat | Allomancy-focused |
Those were plans for the 2012 project, not features announced for a current game. In his December 2018 State of the Sanderson, the author wrote, “Unfortunately, Mistborn: Birthright never came together.” He also described preliminary conversations with studios but said there were no contracts. Birthright was not released as the announced video game.
