Because ascension requirements vary by character and target ascension, use the current in-game character and crafting screens to check exact quantities before farming or crafting.
What character ascension does
Ascension is the progression step that unlocks a higher character level cap. Character EXP items—often called EXP books—fill levels only up to the character’s current cap. You must complete the required ascension before you can use EXP to level beyond it.
The game distinguishes Character EXP Materials, Character Level-Up Materials, and Character Ascension Materials in its resource categories. HoYoWiki’s Teyvat’s Resources lists the game’s material types.
How to check a character’s exact material requirements
There is no single reliable material total for every character: requirements depend on the character and the ascension you plan to unlock. The in-game crafting interface lets you filter required materials by character and then by skill, ascension level, or equipped weapon. Its Source display also shows how many relevant items can be crafted. These features are described in HoYoverse’s Version 5.1 Update Details.

- Select the character and target ascension. Check the character’s Ascension screen to see the materials and Mora required for the next ascension.
- Open a Crafting Bench. Use the crafting interface’s character filter and select the relevant ascension level to inspect the required materials.
- Check your inventory and the Source display. Compare what you already hold with what the interface says can be crafted, then use each material’s Source information to plan where to obtain the remainder.
Check again for each ascension: the requirement list changes with the target, and quantities should be verified for the character you are actually building.
How to use EXP materials without confusing them with ascension
Once the character is at the current cap, more EXP items cannot take them past it. Ascend first, then add EXP for the newly available levels. On the character enhancement screen, Auto Add can apply enough Character EXP Materials to reach the highest level available before the next ascension, according to HoYoverse’s Version 4.3 developers discussion.

Can Dust of Azoth replace an ascension material?
Dust of Azoth can convert the elemental type of eligible character ascension materials at a Crafting Bench. It is a conversion aid, not a substitute for every character-specific item or for all the materials in an ascension requirement. HoYoverse explains the system in its Version 1.3 Update Details.

Level 90 remains the ordinary character cap, but a special system introduced in the Version Luna I notice can extend the cap for eligible level-90 characters. Consuming Masterless Stella Fortuna raises the cap to level 95 with one item or level 100 with two. HoYoverse describes this as a special cap-breaking mechanic, separate from ordinary ascension, that does not require additional materials.
