Battlefield REDSEC launched on October 28, 2025, alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1—not tomorrow. EA introduced it as a free-to-play experience that does not require ownership of Battlefield 6.
When did Battlefield REDSEC come out?
EA launched Battlefield REDSEC on October 28, 2025, at the same time as Battlefield 6 Season 1. James Mattone, Senior Specialist, CRM Strategy at Battlefield Studios, described it in the launch post as “Battlefield’s first-ever free-to-play Battle Royale game, and it’s launching today.” That was true on launch day; the announcement is now historical.
EA later published a July 2026 announcement, confirming that REDSEC is part of Battlefield’s ongoing offering. The original launch details below refer to the package announced in October 2025; they should not be read as confirmation that every launch format or feature remains unchanged today.
What did REDSEC include at launch?
The October 2025 launch package combined three experiences: Battle Royale, Gauntlet, and Portal. They serve different purposes: survival competition, squad-based mission elimination, and custom-content creation or discovery.

|---|---|

Battle Royale
The launch Battle Royale format put 100 players on Fort Lyndon. Teams could queue as 25 four-player squads or 50 duos. EA highlighted class-based play, loot, vehicles, tactical destruction, and a lethal ring as parts of the mode.
Gauntlet
Gauntlet is built around squad elimination rather than being the standard last-squad-standing Battle Royale format. In the launch version, eight four-player squads faced randomized missions, with five minutes for objectives before eliminations carried squads out of the tournament.

Is Battlefield REDSEC free, and do you need Battlefield 6?
EA described REDSEC as free-to-play and said players do not need to own Battlefield 6 to access it. EA’s official materials list an EA account and a persistent internet connection as requirements, and disclose optional in-game purchases. “Free-to-play” therefore means no Battlefield 6 purchase is required to enter REDSEC; it does not mean the game has no optional purchases.
