1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, the most useful default is to keep each unique character’s signature command set available, then change their current job to fit the battle and the abilities they have learned. Ramza is the flexible all-rounder; Agrias, Mustadio, Orlandeau and the other named recruits are generally best built around the jobs that make them distinct. There is no single optimal setup for every fight: job unlocks, ability investment, role, and edition all matter.
This guide focuses on The Ivalice Chronicles. Balthier and Luso are included separately as War of the Lions-only characters; the cited roster reference does not list them in The Ivalice Chronicles.
How to choose a job in Final Fantasy Tactics
“Best job” can mean the job a character is currently using, the job they level in, or the command abilities they bring along. Those choices are related but not interchangeable. Square Enix explains that abilities learned in one job “can be used even after changing to another job,” so a character can preserve a signature command set while taking a different job’s stats, equipment access, and role.
Separate the current job from long-term progression
Job growth affects character development when leveling, while a job’s stat multipliers affect stats while that job is equipped. The distinction matters: a job that is useful for leveling is not automatically the best job to use in a particular battle. Job access also depends on progress in other jobs, so the strongest option may not be available immediately.

Use signature jobs as a starting point, not a rule
Unique characters have distinctive command sets. For a practical build, keep access to the commands that define the character, then add secondary abilities to fill a party need. A job swap can be worthwhile when it improves the role you need, but it does not make a learned signature ability disappear.
Recommended jobs for the Ivalice Chronicles characters
These are flexible defaults, not a mathematically proven ranking. Adjust secondary abilities to the party and encounter; the references establish the unique jobs and ability carryover, but not universal win rates or damage rankings.
Ramza
Keep Ramza’s Squire/Gallant Knight command set available. His flexible base job makes him a dependable all-rounder; when you need more focused physical pressure, move him into a physical job while retaining the Squire abilities you rely on.
Agrias
Use Holy Knight as her main job so her signature commands remain central. Knight or Monk abilities can add physical support or utility. A more physically oriented current job is another option when you want to emphasize that role without giving up learned Holy Knight abilities.

Mustadio
Keep Machinist as the core of his build. Its ranged control gives him a distinct contribution; pair it with physical abilities or item support according to what the rest of the party lacks instead of turning him into a generic damage dealer.
Rapha
Skyseer is her specialist magic direction. Add a dependable secondary role for consistency or support, and avoid building a plan that requires Skyseer to perform identically in every situation: the cited references do not establish a universal effectiveness ranking for it.
Marach
Netherseer is his specialist option. Pair it with a more dependable secondary when the battle plan cannot accommodate uncertain results. As with Rapha, the available references identify the unique job but do not quantify its performance across encounters.
Meliadoul
Keep Divine Knight as her signature command set, then complement it with physical abilities or equipment options suited to the encounter. Her base class has strong physical-attack growth in the cited stat reference, but that is not, on its own, proof that one current job is best in every battle.

Orlandeau
Sword Saint is the straightforward default. Give him a utility, defensive, or movement secondary to broaden what he contributes rather than spending ability investment duplicating his defining role. The cited reference notes strong physical- and magic-attack growth; those growth observations are not direct damage rankings.
Beowulf
Use Templar as his main job and add a complementary physical or support command set for situations his magic role does not cover. The stat reference notes above-average magic-attack growth, which can inform development but does not establish a universal optimal setup.
Reis
Dragonkin with the Dragon command set is the default direction. Change jobs when a clear role need justifies it, and be precise about Reis’s form and the game version when comparing her stats: the cited reference reports unusually strong human-form growth, not a universal job ranking.
Cloud
Soldier is the thematic, signature choice. Decide which abilities and setup you want before investing in the build rather than assuming his base job is effortless or superior in every encounter; the cited references do not establish a version- and build-specific performance advantage.

War of the Lions characters: Balthier and Luso
The RPG Site roster reference lists these characters as War of the Lions additions, while the cited stat reference says they are not available in The Ivalice Chronicles. Use the following recommendations only if you are playing War of the Lions.
Balthier
Keep Sky Pirate as his signature job and supplement it with utility or physical abilities that address the party’s needs. Do not treat him as part of the current Ivalice Chronicles roster.
Luso
Keep Game Hunter as his signature job, then add abilities that cover a role missing from the party. He is also a War of the Lions-only recommendation in this guide.
How to build generic recruits
Generics are best approached by role rather than by a fixed character-specific prescription. Decide first whether the party needs a physical attacker, healer or support unit, ranged utility, or mage. Then compare candidate jobs using the factors below.

- Growth over time: Consider job growth when choosing where to level, separately from the job you plan to use in a given battle.
- Abilities already learned: Build around commands the character can already use, and account for the job levels needed to learn more.
- Reliability and setup: Consider whether the plan depends on a specific setup or variable outcomes.
- Party gaps: Choose the job that adds something the existing lineup lacks instead of reflexively adding another unit in the same role.
The cited stat guide discusses Ninja, Knight, and Summoner as practical leveling options for different stat goals. Treat that as growth guidance, not a blanket combat tier list: the job you level in and the job you equip for a fight can serve different purposes.
Check the edition before using a build
The Ivalice Chronicles has separate Enhanced and Classic versions, and Classic recreates the 1997 release alongside the War of the Lions translation. Since the roster is not identical across versions, confirm that a character and job are available in your edition before planning around them. Square Enix’s 2025 announcement describes the game’s system as containing over 20 jobs and over 300 character abilities; those counts describe the announced game, not a ranking of which builds are strongest.
