The report was right about Call of Duty: Black Ops 6: Xbox confirmed on May 28, 2024, that it would be available to Game Pass members on launch day. That was not a promise covering every future Call of Duty. In 2026, reporting says new installments will instead join Game Pass about a year after launch.
What the original report said—and what Xbox confirmed
On May 17, 2024, Engadget reported, citing the Wall Street Journal, that the next Call of Duty would arrive on Game Pass on release day. At that point, the report had not identified a title through an Xbox announcement. On May 28, Xbox named Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and confirmed day-one access for Game Pass members. Megan Spurr, Xbox Game Pass senior community lead, wrote: “We’re excited to confirm that Game Pass members will be able to jump into Call of Duty®: Black Ops 6 on day one with Game Pass.” (Engadget, May 17, 2024; Xbox Wire, May 28, 2024)
In February 2024, Xbox had said it planned to bring Activision and Blizzard games—including new releases and older titles—to Game Pass, naming Diablo IV as the first addition. That stated direction was not a release schedule or a guarantee that every future game would be included at launch. (Xbox Wire, February 15, 2024)
Which Call of Duty games were added in 2024?
| Title | Game Pass availability announced | Access covered |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 | Day one, confirmed May 28, 2024 | Game Pass members; cloud play through Game Pass Ultimate began October 25, 2024 |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III | July 24, 2024 | Game Pass for Console, PC Game Pass, and Game Pass Ultimate |
| Call of Duty: Warzone | Cloud access announced October 14, 2024, beginning October 25 | Game Pass Ultimate cloud play |
These are distinct kinds of availability. Xbox’s July announcement added Modern Warfare III to named Game Pass plans. Its October announcement separately brought cloud play for Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III, and Warzone to Game Pass Ultimate. (Xbox Wire, July 23, 2024; Xbox Wire, October 14, 2024)

Will the next Call of Duty be on Game Pass at launch?
Not according to 2026 reporting. PC Gamer reported that future Call of Duty releases would be added to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season—about a year after launch, rather than on day one. The report said the change would not remove games already on Game Pass. Windows Central also reported a 2026 Activision promotional message saying a new Call of Duty would not be on Game Pass that year. These are reported updates; the available sources do not include a directly reviewed Xbox policy announcement explaining the change. (PC Gamer; Windows Central)
The practical distinction is between games already in the catalog and future releases: the 2026 reporting describes a later arrival for new installments, not a reversal of the earlier additions. It does not establish the exact availability of every title in every region or the full terms of any future release.

Does Game Pass mean you have to buy the game?
No purchase is required for access through a qualifying Game Pass plan while the title is included in that plan’s catalog. Subscription access and buying a copy are different routes: Xbox’s Modern Warfare III announcement also listed a Cross-Gen Bundle for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Current listings, prices, and catalog availability can change, so check the relevant Xbox store listing for the title and region before subscribing or purchasing. (Xbox Wire)
