Bandai Namco describes Digimon Story Time Stranger as an RPG with monster-taming elements: players investigate a world-collapse mystery, collect and raise Digimon, and fight turn-based battles. How deep are collection and evolution?
Bandai Namco says the game features more than 450 Digimon, each with distinct traits and non-linear evolution paths. That is the publisher’s stated roster scale, not a count independently verified here. The number points to a broad collection and team-building system, while the individual traits and branching paths are intended to give players choices beyond simply filling out a catalog.

Training, evolution, and customization are closely tied to the battle system: the roster is not just a set of collectibles, but the material from which players shape their combat team. For players who enjoy experimenting with party composition and developing creatures over time, this is the game’s clearest strength.
How good are the battles and story?
Reviews identify the battle and monster-raising systems as major strengths. Nintendo Life’s Switch 2 review praises the story, world, and accessible systems, and considers the adventure suitable for newcomers. GamesRadar+’s PC review praises the raising and battling mechanics. These are outlet assessments rather than a universal verdict, but together they suggest the game is approachable while still offering room to engage with team strategy.
The main caveat is momentum. GamesRadar+ says the pacing can be slow and that Digital World dungeons may feel long and slow. That friction matters because the story and dungeon exploration are part of the route between battles and collection milestones. If you want a consistently brisk narrative or compact dungeon runs, the pacing may not suit you; if you are comfortable spending time exploring and developing a team, the systems have more opportunity to carry the experience.
GamesRadar+’s review was based on a PC copy provided by the publisher. Nintendo Life’s review covers the Switch 2 version. Their comments reflect different platforms and individual review judgments, not a controlled comparison between editions.
Which platforms and versions are available?
The initial editions released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in October 2025. Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 editions followed on July 10, 2026. Bandai Namco reported more than 1 million units sold in February 2026, after the initial platform launch; that is the publisher’s figure, not an independently audited sales result.
Nintendo distinguishes the Switch software from the Switch 2 software. The Switch 2 listing is for the Switch 2 Standard Edition, and Nintendo notes that a separately sold Switch version exists. Check the platform and edition carefully before purchasing, particularly if you already own the Switch release.

Switch 2 graphics modes

These are publisher-stated maximum specifications, not a guarantee that every scene runs at the ceiling. The original Switch version does not offer a Quality/Performance mode selection. Bandai Namco says the Switch game can receive a graphics update when played on Switch 2, but that updated Switch software remains distinct from the native Switch 2 version and its save data cannot be shared with Switch 2 software.

Bandai Namco lists Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Digital Ultimate editions. Its overview says Deluxe adds the Cyber Sleuth costume set and season pass. Ultimate adds a costume pack, three side missions, special Digimon unlocks, Public Safety Suit costumes, a supplies set, and a Cyber Sleuth BGM pack. Contents and availability can vary by platform and storefront, so confirm the current listing for the edition you intend to buy.
Bandai Namco said the Switch season pass includes three DLC packs, each with five additional Digimon and a story episode, plus a Golden Moai farm item. The publisher’s game page also lists the expansion A Hero’s Eternal Legacy, announced for September 3, 2026, and describes it as taking place three years after the battle involving the Agents and Olympos XII. Check Bandai Namco’s current announcements and your platform’s store for final release timing and platform-specific availability.
Nintendo’s demo covers the opening chapter. A same-platform demo save can transfer to the full game. Completing the demo unlocks a separate Central Town Adventure Trial, but that trial’s data does not transfer. Demo saves also do not transfer between the Switch and Switch 2 software versions.
Is Digimon Story Time Stranger worth playing?
It is a strong fit for players who want a substantial Digimon-raising loop: a publisher-stated roster of more than 450, branching evolution paths, customizable teams, and turn-based battles that reward building a party. Reviewers also praise its story and world, while GamesRadar+’s pacing and dungeon caveats are worth weighing if you prefer a faster-moving RPG. The available reviews do not establish that it is objectively the best game in the series; they support a more specific conclusion that its collection and combat systems are central strengths, balanced by a potentially slow journey through the story.
For Switch 2 buyers, choose between the native Switch 2 edition and the separately sold Switch version based on the mode options and save-data distinction. On other systems, the October 2025 release is the relevant edition. Check the platform storefront for current contents and availability before selecting an edition.
