Capture beasts with the Nab-Sack and care for them in the Room of Requirement. To breed them, complete Deek’s questline through Foal of the Dead and use a Breeding Pen with a male and female of the same species. Shiny beasts are rare appearance variants; they can be captured directly, and a shiny parent gives offspring a chance—not a guarantee—of being shiny.
How beast capture and the Vivarium unlock
Beast rescue is a campaign unlock, not an activity available from the start. Follow the early beast-handling quest, The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom, to learn how to rescue creatures. The captured beasts are kept in Vivariums in the Room of Requirement, which serve as sanctuaries rather than a way to permanently tame animals in the wild. GameSpot’s beast capture and Vivarium guide describes the system as opening partway through the campaign.
Where to find beast dens
Open the world map and look for paw icons; these mark beast dens. The icon tells you where to search, but the species you find depends on the den. Return to dens to look for more creatures, including when you are searching for a shiny variant.
The regional coverage in the guides spans South Hogwarts Region, Hogwarts Valley, North Ford Bog, the Forbidden Forest, Hogsmeade Valley, Marunweem Lake, Poidsear Coast, and Feldcroft Region. Not every species appears in every region, and the available location references do not establish a complete, verified nearest-Floo-Flame list for all species. Windows Central’s beast location and shiny guide is organized by species and gives den directions. Examples it lists include Hippogriffs in the Forbidden Forest, Manor Cape, and Poidsear Coast; Jobberknolls in the Forbidden Forest and Feldcroft; Mooncalves in South Hogwarts, the Forbidden Forest, and Feldcroft; Thestrals in North Ford Bog and Marunweem Lake; and Unicorns in the Forbidden Forest.

How to capture beasts
- Unlock the Nab-Sack. Complete The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom and follow its instructions to learn beast rescue.
- Find a den. Use the paw icons on the world map to locate a suitable den, then travel there.
- Approach and rescue a beast. Use the Nab-Sack as instructed on screen. Beasts may move or flee, so spells that help you approach or briefly restrain a creature can make the rescue easier.
- Return to the Room of Requirement. Rescued creatures can be cared for in a Vivarium. You can revisit dens to collect additional beasts.
Guides describe Vivarium capacity limits, but those figures may be version-sensitive; check the game’s current on-screen limits rather than relying on an older numeric cap.
How to breed beasts
Breeding requires a Vivarium, a Breeding Pen, and a male and female of the same species. PowerPyx’s breeding guide describes this quest-and-setup sequence:

- Complete The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom.
- Continue Deek’s quests through The Plight of the House-Elf and Foal of the Dead. The latter unlocks access to the Breeding Pen.
- Acquire the Breeding Pen spellcraft from Tomes and Scrolls, then place the pen in a Vivarium.
- Put a male and female beast of the same eligible species in that Vivarium and interact with the pen to begin breeding.
Game8’s Breeding Pen and shiny-beast guide lists a 1,000-Gold spellcraft cost and a 30-minute in-game wait. Those are guide-reported values, not independently verified against every current game version.
Which beasts can breed?
PowerPyx counts 13 beast types and identifies the Phoenix as the exception that cannot be bred. That leaves the other 12 types as breeding candidates; a Phoenix pair is not required. The count is specific to that guide’s classification.

How to find shiny beasts
Shiny beasts are alternate-appearance variants. You can look for one at a den and rescue it just like another beast, or try breeding with a shiny parent. Game8 says at least one shiny parent gives offspring a chance of being shiny; it does not make shiny offspring certain. The cited guides do not establish a dependable percentage, a guaranteed inheritance rule, or a verified reroll rate.
Windows Central gives these visual examples: white Fwoopers, pale Giant Purple Toads, grey Hippogriffs, white-and-grey Jobberknolls, white Mooncalves with blue eyes, light-grey Nifflers, silver Thestrals, and warm-golden Unicorns. Treat color descriptions as visual guide references: in-game lighting can affect how a coat looks. Revisit dens and inspect creatures rather than assuming a particular color alone proves a variant.
