Dragon’s Dogma 2 faced criticism around its March 2024 launch after paid optional add-ons appeared in storefront listings. Some players objected to microtransactions in a full-price, single-player RPG, particularly items associated with convenience or progression. The evidence supports criticism from some players—not a claim that the entire player base was angry or that the purchases were required to finish the game.
What sparked the backlash?
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a single-player action RPG in which players adventure with AI-controlled Pawn companions. Capcom released it on March 22, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Its digital Deluxe Edition included the “A Boon for Adventurers – New Journey Pack” DLC, while storefront listings for paid add-ons became a flashpoint around launch. Contemporary coverage reported complaints about the add-ons, including items associated with convenience. The available evidence does not establish that every listed item had the same in-game availability, or that the items were necessary to complete the campaign. It is more accurate to say some players criticized paid add-ons in a full-price game than to characterize the reaction as universal anger. The PlayStation Store currently labels in-game purchases optional, but that present-day label does not by itself settle every question about how each item could be obtained at launch. The current US PlayStation Store listing reflects its present catalog and labeling.
What did Capcom say?
At its 2024 shareholder meeting, Capcom answered a question about in-game issues and criticism from some players. The company said it took player opinions and requests seriously and was working to address them while respecting the game’s worldview. That was a general response about player criticism and game issues, not a specific response to the microtransactions. Capcom’s shareholder meeting materials include the written answer.

Capcom reported more than 2.5 million copies sold by April 2, 2024, in a sales announcement. Separately, the shareholder Q&A reported approximately 2.6 million units sold in fiscal year 2023. Those are figures from different announcements and time frames, not evidence of how many players approved of the add-ons. Capcom’s April 2 sales announcement provides the first figure.

Base-game updates
Capcom’s Steam announcement feed describes 2026 updates to the base game, including a reusable Eternal Ferrystone to make fast travel easier. A later planned update was described as adding improved frame rates, extra save slots, and quality-of-life changes. The same feed said certain DLC items would be discontinued ahead of the expansion. Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 Steam announcements are the source for those updates; availability and implementation can vary by platform and timing.

Dark Arisen expansion
Capcom announced Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen as a separate paid story expansion, with an October 9, 2026 release date for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Capcom said the expansion draws on feedback received after the main game’s release. It is distinct from the smaller optional add-ons that prompted the launch criticism: this is a paid expansion adding a new story. Edition and store changes
A Capcom Town Store notice dated June 12, 2026, said the Deluxe Edition would stop being sold in that store on June 25, while the base game would remain available, and announced a planned digital price reduction. This notice applies to that store; it should not be assumed to describe every regional storefront. The US PlayStation Store page currently lists a Standard Edition, an expansion preorder, optional in-game purchases, and a Dark Arisen package.
