Getting Halsin to your camp is only the first step. To add him to your active party, complete his Act Two quest: rescue Thaniel, reunite him with Oliver, then speak with Halsin at camp. To keep him as a permanent companion, defeat Ketheric Thorm and lift the Shadow Curse before leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
Camp follower or active party member?
Halsin’s arrival at camp does not automatically make him playable in your active party. First he must survive Act One and become a camp follower. His Act Two quest then unlocks him as a party member temporarily; finishing the quest’s broader objective before leaving the region is what lets him stay permanently.
If you saved Halsin but skipped the tiefling celebration, he can still appear at your camp in Act Two. Larian confirmed this change in its Patch 8 notes. His arrival does not skip the quest steps below.
How to recruit Halsin during Act Two
- Find Halsin at camp. Once you enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands, speak with him and ask how to lift the curse. If he is not at camp despite surviving Act One, check that you have entered Act Two and allow the camp scene to occur.
- Get the lead from Art Cullagh. Art is at Last Light Inn. Wake him with the Battered Lute, which you can recover from Malus Thorm at the House of Healing. If Art has died, use Speak with Dead to learn the same information. You can also start the quest by asking Halsin directly.
- Meet Halsin at the lakeshore. Go to the lakeshore north of Last Light Inn. Halsin enters a portal to retrieve Thaniel, leaving your party to defend it.
- Protect the portal for four turns. The portal must survive the encounter; if it is destroyed, Halsin is lost and the quest fails. The BG3 Wiki walkthrough describes the four-turn defense. As a practical approach, use area control and deal with ranged attackers threatening the portal.
- Find Oliver and reunite him with Thaniel. After Thaniel is rescued, speak with Halsin at camp. He explains that a missing part remains in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Find Oliver at the House in Deep Shadows, also called the House of Flowers, and resolve the encounter so he reunites with Thaniel.
- Speak with Halsin at camp again. After the reunion, talk to him. He can now join your active party for the rest of Act Two.
How to keep Halsin permanently
Recruiting Halsin into the active party after the Thaniel and Oliver sequence is not the final condition for keeping him. Ketheric Thorm remains the anchor of the Shadow Curse. Defeat Ketheric and lift the curse before leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands; otherwise, Halsin stays behind.

What can prevent recruitment?
- Halsin dies: His quest cannot reach its normal outcome if he is killed.
- The portal is destroyed: Halsin is lost, and the quest fails.
- Oliver is not reunited with Thaniel: Rescuing Thaniel alone is not enough; Halsin can still leave permanently if the two halves are not reunited.
- You leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands too soon: If you depart for Baldur’s Gate without defeating Ketheric and lifting the curse, Halsin stays in the region.
These outcomes describe the normal quest route; exact scenes and available dialogue can vary with your choices and game state.
