Two people can play Minecraft together on one Nintendo Switch using couch co-op. Start a world in the current Minecraft game, connect a compatible second controller, and have player two join by following the prompt shown in-game. Nintendo lists same-system play for 1–4 players; a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is for online play, not for sharing one console.
How do you play 2-player Minecraft on one Switch?
- Open the current Minecraft for Nintendo Switch game. Nintendo lists a separate 2017 Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition listing, so make sure you are following instructions for the game you have.
- Choose an existing world or create one, then enter it with the first player.
- Connect a second compatible controller if it is not already paired with the console. The exact controller setup depends on your hardware and what you own.
- Have the second player follow the join prompt displayed by the game. Nintendo confirms same-system couch co-op but does not publish one universal button sequence for every controller setup and game version.
Nintendo describes the current game as supporting “Up to four people” in couch co-op on the same system. For two players, you do not need a second console or an internet connection.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online for two players?
No, not for couch co-op on one Switch. Nintendo Switch Online and internet access are required for online multiplayer, not for two people sharing a console. Nintendo also lists local wireless play for 2–8 players, but that uses separate systems rather than one shared screen.
How couch co-op differs from local wireless and online play
| Play style | How it works | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Couch co-op | Players share one Switch and screen. | Nintendo lists single-system play for 1–4 players. A second usable controller input may be needed for player two. |
| Local wireless | Players connect separate Switch systems nearby. | Nintendo lists 2–8 players. Additional games, systems, and accessories may be required. |
| Online | Players connect over the internet, including friends on other supported devices. | Nintendo lists 2–8 players. Switch online play requires Nintendo Switch Online and internet access. |
For cross-play with people on non-Nintendo devices, everyone must use Bedrock-compatible Minecraft. The Switch version supports Bedrock cross-play; a Microsoft account is used to play with people on other supported platforms. For Switch sign-in, select “Sign in with a Microsoft Account” in Minecraft and follow the code instructions displayed in a browser. See Minecraft multiplayer requirements and Microsoft account sign-in on Nintendo Switch.

What if player two cannot join?
- Check that the second controller is paired and recognized by the Switch, then follow the prompt currently shown in the game.
- Confirm you are launching the current Minecraft game or the legacy edition you own; the listings are separate.
- If the problem is with online multiplayer rather than couch co-op, check that both players have compatible game versions, multiplayer permissions are enabled, the host is available, the network works, and the Switch online subscription is active. Minecraft Help lists these as relevant multiplayer requirements.
Controller and Switch Lite considerations
You do not automatically need to buy a controller: first check whether your existing hardware provides two compatible controller inputs. Nintendo warns that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer and that software compatibility and play experience can differ on Switch Lite. Check your actual controller setup and the console’s prompts before purchasing anything; the official product information does not establish one guaranteed Switch Lite configuration for every player.
