To beat Moorwing, prioritize avoiding its blades and swipes, then punish it briefly after a low swoop passes or its blade paths clear. If you would rather skip the first fight, you can reach Bellhart by another route or complete The Lost Fleas Wish before defeating Moorwing; the encounter can return in Act 2 if you bypass it.
Where to find Moorwing—and how to skip the fight
Moorwing first guards Bellhart’s east entrance in Greymoor. The route to the boss varies with progression; a walkthrough describes reaching it from Greymoor’s southwest, while completing Chapel of the Reaper can shorten the return trip. Treat that route as guide-specific, since progression and game version can affect the journey. PCGamesN’s Moorwing walkthrough outlines the location.
- Complete The Lost Fleas Wish first: The Flea Caravan moves into the arena, allowing Hornet to bypass the initial encounter.
- Use the alternate route: A path through the Wormways/Shellwood side leads into Bellhart without passing through Moorwing’s first fight.
- Expect a possible later encounter: If skipped, Moorwing can appear in Act 2 near the Greymoor Bellway. The community reference also documents a black-threaded Act 3 form. Hollow Knight Wiki’s Moorwing entry describes these route and encounter variations.
How to read and answer Moorwing’s attacks
The names below are descriptive rather than necessarily canonical. Watch Moorwing’s movement and the blades’ full trajectories; attack only when a pattern has passed and you have room to withdraw. These responses synthesize published guide advice, not hands-on timing tests, so adapt to Hornet’s position and movement.
Low swoop
Moorwing flies low toward Hornet, then rises after passing. Jump over it and, if you can do so safely, strike downward as it passes beneath. The brief opening is after the pass—not a reason to stay close once Moorwing turns back.

Close-range quick swipes
A screech and slight advance signal diagonal slashes when Hornet is nearby. Back away or dash clear as the tell begins; trying to squeeze in another hit can leave you inside the swipe sequence.
Ground-to-air blade toss
Moorwing sends a spinning blade along the ground before it lifts into the air. Follow it instead of jumping on instinct: the rising or returning path can catch a jump. In the later version of this attack, two blades may come in succession and the second can loop back, so wait until both trajectories are clear before approaching.

Inverted blade toss
At the community reference’s listed threshold of 65% health (390/780 HP), Moorwing gains an inverted toss, along with altered versions of two earlier attacks. The flipped blades arc down from both sides, cross, and continue along the ground. Create distance, watch where the paths meet, and move in only after they have passed. A published guide advises running away and jumping a blade as it catches up; use that only when the arena position leaves a clear landing and escape route. The threshold and HP are from Hollow Knight Wiki, accessed 2026; they are not general game-wide figures.
Use short openings rather than trading hits
Moorwing’s large body and fast approaches can make it tempting to keep attacking, but the safer rhythm is to let an attack finish, land a short punish, then reset your spacing. The swoop is a likely opportunity if you can strike as it passes; after swipes or blade throws, wait until the movement and return paths are genuinely over. Allies and optional equipment
Recruit Garmond and Zaza
Garmond and Zaza can assist in the encounter if you have met them in Greymoor and accept their offer. One guide says to trigger the boss once, return to them, and recruit them before trying again. This depends on encountering them beforehand and following the recruitment opportunity; it is not an automatic boss-fight effect. Choose tools for safe punishes
Community guides suggest Reaper Crest for its wide downward attack, Sting Shard for area damage against Moorwing’s large body, and Silkspear for ranged pressure. These are optional suggestions, not required gear or a universally best build. Favor the option that lets you land damage during a clear opening without getting caught; also consider whether you want to reserve silk for healing or spend it on attacks.
