Pacific Drive is built around a repeating survival loop: prepare your station wagon in the garage, choose a route, scavenge and investigate in the Zone, then return with supplies for repairs and upgrades. The car is your lifeline, so a successful trip depends as much on its condition and your preparation as on what you find.
How a Pacific Drive run works
Think of each excursion as a trip with a purpose, not a checklist to clear. You leave the garage with a prepared car, follow a route into the Zone, gather resources or useful data, and try to bring both yourself and the wagon back. Supplies from a return can support the next round of repairs, crafting, and upgrades.
The car is central to the survival system: fuel, vehicle panels, repairs, and upgrades all matter. Ironwood’s lead designer describes survival mechanics and their related resources as being built around the car. A damaged or poorly supplied wagon makes the drive harder, so treat maintenance materials as progression needs, not incidental loot.
Prepare at the garage before leaving
The garage is your safe base for recovery and planning. Before your next trip, use it to check the car, deal with damage, unload what you brought back, craft available supplies, and review research or upgrades. The developer interview describes repairs, upgrades, and route planning as part of the garage’s purpose; the community-maintained Pacific Drive user manual also offers between-run advice.

- Check the wagon: Look over its condition and make repairs you can manage before setting out.
- Review fuel and supplies: The official Pacific Drive website specifically emphasizes keeping the gas tank filled, protecting the panels, and making repairs on the fly. Bring tools and supplies the game has taught you to craft.
- Unload and plan: Put your last haul to use, check what you can research or make, and choose a route with your current vehicle condition in mind.
Make each excursion worth its risks
Scavenging gives you resources and data for future progress, but looting means leaving the protection and mobility of the car. A container is not automatically worth the detour or exposure. Prioritize what supports your immediate plan, and stay aware of the car and the surrounding conditions while you are outside it. PC Gamer’s 2024 beginner guide also highlights the risk involved in leaving the vehicle to scavenge; its advice may not reflect later game updates.
The official site sums up the trade-off this way: “The golden rule in the Zone is ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’ — some materials can only be found in the most dangerous places.” Take that as a reason to make deliberate risk choices, not as a requirement to pursue every dangerous cache.

Use the map and respect the storm
Check the map as you plan and keep track of how much time you spend on optional exploration. The official site identifies anomalies and the Zone Storm as threats, and warns that the storm can destroy anything it catches. When the game signals an opportunity to escape, prioritize getting back over one more optional stop.
Some useful materials are found in more dangerous places, so risk cannot be avoided entirely. The practical distinction is whether a detour serves the trip’s purpose and whether you can still make your way out; do not let scavenging distract you from changing conditions.

Choose upgrades for the route and hazards
There is no single setup established as best for every challenge. In an interview hosted by Unreal Engine, the developers discuss examples such as doors, panels, and bumpers with elemental resistance, and wheels that perform better on particular surfaces. Use those examples as a way to think about upgrades: match the protection or handling you build to the problems you have encountered and the route ahead.
Successful returns are chances to improve the next attempt. Review what the trip cost the car, what hazards caused trouble, and what resources you brought home; then use garage research and crafting to address the most relevant weakness.

- Watch the map and storm warnings; leave optional scavenging behind when it is time to escape.
