Start small: make a practical camp on safe ground, gather basic materials, and prepare for each expedition before entering the Shroud. Enshrouded’s early rhythm is exploration, survivor rescue, Flame progression, and better gear—not building a grand base before you know what you need.
Set up a useful first camp
Before investing in a large base, collect basic resources and craft tools that make gathering and building easier. A community getting-started route recommends gathering twigs, stone, plant fiber, and logs, then making an axe, pickaxe, club, bow, bandages, and a construction hammer. Treat that as a practical suggested loadout rather than a required recipe list; exact recipes and unlocks can change between versions. Enshrouded Companion’s Getting Started guide was updated July 26, 2026.
Place your first Flame Altar on Shroud-free ground and build around it. The altar gives your camp a useful anchor, while staying out of the fog makes it a safer place to regroup and prepare. Keep the camp modest but functional: shelter, warmth, a bed, a workbench, nearby storage, and room for survivors and their crafting stations. A fan-made Enshrouded Beginner Guide describes the altar’s building and protected-zone role, but its exact dimensions and values are version-sensitive.
Prepare before entering the Shroud
The Shroud is not just another stretch of terrain: enemies can be dangerous, and you need to manage how long you remain in it. Official Enshrouded support tips recommend bringing food and healing, knowing how you will get back out, and using ranged weapons such as bows or staves against flying enemies that are difficult to reach in melee.
#1 Best Overall
- Pack food for the trip. Food grants temporary bonuses. Keen Games’ support page gives examples including health, regeneration for Health, Stamina, or Mana, and strength. Pick bonuses that suit your approach and the expedition rather than carrying food at random.
- Bring healing and a Shroud Survival Potion. A community beginner route recommends both before a Shroud expedition. Use the live game’s item descriptions to confirm effects and availability.
- Plan an exit. Note your way out before pushing deeper. Look for a route back to clear ground or a time refill when you need to extend a trip; do not assume you can explore indefinitely.
- Carry a ranged option. A bow or staff gives you a way to deal with flying enemies when a melee weapon cannot reach them.
Choose provisions according to the trip: a short scouting run and a longer Shroud excursion do not need the same preparation. If you are playing with others, coordinate who carries healing or ranged attacks; the sources do not establish one universally optimal party setup.
Equip traversal gear before you need it
Finding a tool does not necessarily mean it is ready to use. Keen Games’ official support tips state: “Gliders and Grappling Hooks need first to be equipped before they can be used.” Check your equipment before setting off, especially if your route depends on crossing a gap or reaching a ledge.

Follow the exploration and upgrade loop
Think of early progression as a cycle rather than a single checklist. Explore points of interest, rescue survivors, use their specialist crafting and quests, strengthen the Flame to support tougher Shroud progression, and improve gear and skills before the next expedition. The exact order and pace depend on what you find and how you play; the community guide offers a route, not an official progression mandate.
- Scout nearby points of interest. Explore within reach of your supplies and return to camp when you need to recover or craft.
- Rescue survivors. They open specialist crafting options and quests that help you expand what you can make.
- Strengthen the Flame. Flame progression is part of preparing for tougher Shroud areas; check the current in-game requirements before committing resources.
- Improve your equipment and skills. Use what the previous trip taught you to prepare for the next one, rather than pushing onward with an unchanged setup.
Choose a direction without locking yourself into a build
A community beginner guide suggests prioritizing rescue of the Blacksmith and committing to a primary skill path. That can give an early run focus, but it is one guide’s recommendation—not an official requirement or a proven best build. Decide whether you are leaning toward melee, ranged combat, or magic based on what you enjoy, and adjust as you learn what each expedition demands. No single class or universally optimal build is established by the sources cited here.

Verify version-sensitive details in your game
Enshrouded’s exact costs, stats, altar values, recipes, and unlock order can change. The fan-made beginner guide was updated September 18, 2026, and explicitly flags some early-access values for rechecking at version 1.0. Use it for orientation, but confirm a requirement in the live build before spending scarce materials or planning around a precise value. The official support tips page is dated January 19, 2024, so treat its advice as useful general guidance rather than a guarantee that every detail reflects the current build.
