Pokémon GO’s Trainer level cap is now 80, up from 50. The change took effect on October 15, 2025, and the XP curve was rebalanced so Trainers can level up more frequently. Your existing XP was applied to the new curve, and the level-up research gates now apply at levels 71–80.
What changed in Pokémon GO’s leveling system?
The October 15, 2025 update changed the Trainer leveling system—not Pokémon levels. Niantic increased the Trainer cap from 50 to 80 and rebalanced the overall XP curve. Existing XP was carried over and applied to the new curve; Niantic said no Trainer would lose a level, and Trainers who were level 23 or higher would gain at least one level. Level-Up Research tasks that previously applied to levels 41–50 were removed. The new research gates are at levels 71–80: to advance through those levels, you need both the required XP and completed tasks.
What is the new level cap, and how much XP do milestone levels take?
The cap is Trainer level 80. Pokémon GO publishes the following cumulative XP totals on the revised curve. These are totals needed to reach each level, not the amount needed to advance from the previous level.

These milestones do not provide an exact threshold for every level. To judge your progress, check your current Trainer level and XP in your profile, then compare your total with the published milestone nearest your goal. The official figures do not support a precise old-to-new curve conversion for every level.

- Open your Trainer Profile.
- Once you reach level 70, tap the binoculars icon beside the XP bar.
- Review the listed Level-Up Research requirements, your progress and the task rewards.
For levels 71–80, completing the research tasks is required in addition to earning the XP for the next level. Pokémon GO does not state in the cited update that levels below 71 have this research gate.
What rewards came with the update?
Level-up rewards now include added capacity for Pokémon, Items, Gifts and Postcards, as well as avatar items beginning at level 25. Eligible rewards for earlier levels were granted retroactively. The former level 40–50 avatar items are no longer earned through leveling under the new system; cosmetics already earned, including the level 50 jacket, remain with their owners.

At level 70 and above, Trainers also have an increased chance of becoming Lucky Friends with Best Friends. Pokémon GO has not published a numerical probability for that increase.

XP comes from activities such as catching Pokémon, visiting PokéStops and battling. The required total rises with Trainer level, but the rebalanced curve is intended to let players earn levels more frequently. There is no verified XP-per-hour ranking here, so the most useful plan is to play the activities that fit your routine and check your in-game XP progress rather than rely on a universal fastest-method claim.
