What happens if you save or kill the Nightsong?

These are route-level outcomes, not a guarantee that every character or later event will play out identically: downstream results depend on your other decisions and which characters remain alive. GameSpot describes the weapon rewards and reported casualties; the BG3 Wiki’s Find the Nightsong guide describes later Aylin outcomes and the quest ending.
Where the choice happens
The decision takes place in the Shadowfell during Act Two, where the Find the Nightsong quest meets Shadowheart’s personal quest. Keep Shadowheart in your party when Aylin’s fate is decided. If she is absent, she leaves permanently; the BG3 Wiki’s Shadowfell page also warns that excluding her from the decision makes her leave.
Can you persuade Shadowheart to spare Aylin?
Shadowheart’s decision depends on her approval and a separate Nightsong Points system. The BG3 Wiki’s Nightsong Point page documents 40 approval as the threshold at which several listed dialogue choices spare Aylin without a skill check. Below that threshold, documented persuasion options include DC 14 and DC 21 checks; which dialogue appears also depends on approval and Nightsong Points.

These are game-mechanics values, not real-world statistics. Dialogue availability can vary with your save, so do not count on one exact line or check. If you want the option to take another branch, save before the conversation.
What does saving Aylin unlock in Act Three?
If Aylin survives, you can later warn her that Lorroakan is hunting her and decide whether to confront him. Siding with Aylin against Lorroakan can add Aylin and Isobel as allies for Gather Your Allies. Saving her preserves those later choices; it does not automatically settle the conflict in her favor. Is the choice affected by patches?
Larian’s Patch 3 notes mention fixes related to Shadowheart receiving the Spear of the Night and dialogue around freeing the Nightsong. The final patch notes also list a fix involving Shadowheart after the Nightsong decision. Those notes confirm that related scene behavior has been patched; they do not document every later hotfix or guarantee that every guide reflects the current build.
