A useful starting point is to pick one goal, check the mod’s current requirements, and install only what you need. Many options rely on REFramework, whose support can be affected by game updates.
Choose a mod by what you want to change
These picks come from a PC Gamer roundup published on 13 March 2025, so use it as a menu rather than a guarantee that every file remains compatible with the current game build. Check each live mod page and its requirements before installing.

Which picks involve combat or balance trade-offs?
Overlay: more information during a hunt
MHWilds Overlay is the most direct choice if you want health, part-break, and party-DPS information on screen. That extra visibility may change how you approach a hunt, and the listed CatLib and REFramework-D2D dependencies mean you should check compatibility for the whole stack—not just the overlay itself.
Weakness icons: a quicker elemental cue
The weakness indicator aims for a smaller interface change: an elemental icon in monster entries. Treat it as a quick cue, not a substitute for the full monster information, especially when a monster has multiple elemental weaknesses.

The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
Character edits: convenience with a paid-feature caveat
The character-edit script is useful if you want to return to customization without relying on the normal voucher limitation described by PC Gamer. Because that changes access to a paid game feature, check the mod’s current description and consider the context in which you play; the available sources do not establish a universal rule about whether it is allowed or risk-free.
Do performance mods reliably increase FPS?
No universal FPS improvement is established for the performance options here. A Nexus guide packages REFramework, a graphics upscaler, and other configuration changes, but explicitly says it is not an FPS booster and says significant improvement is expected only when Frame Generation is used. Its author’s statement that performance “nearly doubled” with Frame Generation is anecdotal, not an independently verified benchmark with specified test conditions. Special K is another tuning candidate, but its settings depend on your frame-generation use and frame-rate cap. Treat any performance change as configuration-specific rather than assuming a tool or bundle will raise FPS on every PC.

REFramework’s Nexus instructions describe a manual setup, while REFramework.dev also outlines using Fluffy Mod Manager for packaged mods and larger installs. Follow the chosen mod’s README: package formats and requirements can differ.

- For manual REFramework installation, extract
dinput8.dllinto the Monster Hunter Wilds game directory, following the REFramework Nexus instructions. - Place Lua scripts in
reframework/autorunand native plugin DLL files inreframework/plugins. For packaged mods installed with Fluffy Mod Manager, use the game-specific mod folder described in the REFramework.dev guide and the mod’s own instructions. - Add modifications incrementally. If the game stops launching after an addition, that makes it easier to identify what may be involved.
If the game will not launch
REFramework support for Wilds has been described as work in progress; PC Gamer warns that problems can include crashes or a black screen, and that a Capcom patch may require a framework update. Check the live game, framework, and mod pages after updates. The cited framework instructions say removing dinput8.dll temporarily disables REFramework. For full removal, also remove its framework files and configuration artifacts as described by its instructions.

How to choose your first mod
- Want more hunt data? Consider MHWilds Overlay, after checking its additional dependencies.
- Want a quick elemental cue? Try the weakness indicator, while remembering it may not show every weakness.
- Want fewer routine interruptions? Look at Skip Intro Logos or the current Shop Tweaks listing.
- Want customization or a cleaner look? Consider the character-edit script or Persistent Buff Glow Removal, with their respective feature and visual trade-offs in mind.
- Want better performance? Do not assume a bundle guarantees more FPS; choose a specific configuration only after checking what it changes and whether its features fit your setup.
