This list weighs five things: how recognizable each pairing is, how long it recurs across games, how clearly the sides oppose one another, the stakes of the conflict, and how much the rivalry shapes the experience. It includes both rivalries inside games and one rivalry between competing franchises; those are different kinds of competition.
How these rivalries are ranked
The list distinguishes character conflicts from faction and franchise rivalries. A recurring hero and villain can clash directly in a story; Mario and Sonic, by contrast, became rivals largely as mascots for competing companies, not as enemies in their original games. The order below is an editorial judgment, not a consensus or a published scoring system.
The 10 best video game rivalries
1. Mario vs. Bowser — hero and villain
Mario and Bowser are among gaming’s most immediately recognizable recurring opponents. Bowser’s attempts to seize the Mushroom Kingdom and Mario’s role as its defender give their conflict clear goals, while the pairing’s many appearances across Mario games make it a durable anchor for the list. Their rivalry is direct and in-game: unlike Mario and Sonic, they repeatedly oppose one another within the same fictional world. Den of Geek and Gameranx discuss the pairing.
2. Mario vs. Sonic — competing mascots
This rivalry belongs to video game history as much as it does to any game. Nintendo’s Mario and Sega’s Sonic came to represent competing consoles and contrasting brand identities. Sega launched the Genesis in the United States in 1989 and released the first Sonic game in June 1991 to showcase the system and its image, according to HISTORY. The famous Sega campaign line, “Genesis does what Nintendon’t,” captured the competitive posture. Mario and Sonic are not simply recurring enemies in their original games, which is why this entry is a franchise rivalry rather than a character feud.

3. Sonic vs. Dr. Robotnik (Eggman) — hero and antagonist
Sonic’s conflict with the scientist known as Dr. Robotnik in some regions and Dr. Eggman in others is a straightforward, persistent hero-versus-villain rivalry. Robotnik’s schemes give Sonic a recurring opponent whose plans can change while the central opposition remains easy to understand. Den of Geek describes Sonic repeatedly thwarting his scientific plots. The alternate names refer to the same character, not separate rivals.
4. Ryu vs. Sagat — fighting-game rivals
Ryu and Sagat stand out because their history is not a fixed cycle of hatred. Den of Geek traces Sagat’s animosity to the scar Ryu gave him, then notes that by Super Street Fighter IV the two had become friends who still fought. That shift adds character development to a rivalry whose encounters are also expressed through the fighting itself.

5. Master Chief vs. the Covenant — hero and hostile faction
Halo gives its central hero a conflict with consequences larger than a personal grudge: Master Chief faces the Covenant, a hostile faction threatening humanity. The scale and stakes make this a defining opposition in the series, even though it is not a duel between two individual characters. Den of Geek includes the pairing among video game rivalries.
6. The Horde vs. the Alliance — opposing factions
In World of Warcraft, the Horde–Alliance divide works both as story conflict and as a source of player identity. Choosing a side can make the rivalry feel personal to players, while the story has also put the factions in situations where cooperation is necessary. That tension between division and collaboration gives the pairing more texture than a simple, permanent war. Den of Geek describes both the cross-faction animosity and the moments that force cooperation.

7. Guybrush Threepwood vs. LeChuck — comic adventure rivals
The Monkey Island games pit the aspiring pirate Guybrush Threepwood against the undead pirate LeChuck in a rivalry driven by repeated clashes and competing claims involving Elaine Marley. Its comic tone makes the stakes feel different from a world-ending war, and the outcome is not always obvious. Den of Geek points to that uncertainty as part of the pairing’s appeal.
8. Brutal Deluxe vs. the Speedball league — team and competition
Speedball 2 offers a less familiar kind of rivalry: the team Brutal Deluxe competing within the wider league. It broadens a list otherwise dominated by famous heroes, villains, and mascots. This is a sporting competition rather than a single personal feud, so its strength lies in the recurring contest and the team-versus-league framing. Den of Geek identifies the pairing.

9. Earth vs. invaders — a recurring genre conflict
Alien or otherworldly invasions have supplied a durable premise across games: Earth is threatened, and the player resists the attackers. This is a genre-wide rivalry, not one fixed pair of characters or factions. It ranks lower because the sides are less specific than the other entries, but it represents a recognizable conflict structure repeated across many invasion games. Den of Geek includes Earth-versus-invaders as a broad category.
10. Pokémon rivals — a game-specific category, not the animated examples
Pokémon games often frame the player’s journey around a rival character, but the reviewed material does not establish one specific game pairing well enough to rank here. The Pokémon Company’s cited rivalries page covers the animated series, including Ash and Paul, rather than demonstrating a rivalry based on game mechanics. For that reason, Ash and Paul are not counted as a video game rivalry in this list. The category remains useful, but naming an unsupported game pairing would make the ranking less reliable.

Why rivalries matter in games
Rivalries give players a clear way to understand conflict, but they do not all do the same job. A hero and villain such as Mario and Bowser make the stakes legible through repeated opposition. A fighting-game history such as Ryu and Sagat can change as characters do. Factions like the Horde and Alliance let players identify with one side, while Mario and Sonic show how competition between companies can create a cultural rivalry beyond any single game. The strongest examples make their opposing aims memorable and give the conflict room to recur or develop.
