To beat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, first hit three gold-glowing scholars in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library to break her barrier, then attack her while she is down. In the second phase, dodge her sorceries, close in during safe openings, and retreat when she summons spirits.
Where to find Rennala
Rennala is in the Grand Library of the Academy of Raya Lucaria. The fight has two phases: a target-finding puzzle in the library, followed by a sorcery-focused battle in a water-covered arena.

Before you enter
No particular level or build is required. Push Square’s guide recommends level 40, but that is a guide recommendation, not a game requirement or a guarantee that the fight will be easy. A bleed-capable weapon can help deal damage in phase two, and a spirit summon may distract Rennala long enough to create an opening. Both are optional; you still need to read attacks and dodge.
Keep stamina available for evasion and avoid committing to long attack strings. Hookclaws and Lone Wolf Ashes are examples of possible equipment, not universal requirements. The reviewed guides do not establish a ranged setup that reliably outperforms other approaches.

Phase one: break Rennala’s barrier
- Ignore Rennala while she is shielded. Her barrier prevents you from making useful progress by attacking her.
- Find a gold-glowing scholar. Look across the library floor for the active scholar, who may be throwing books. If you cannot spot them, follow the direction of the thrown books back to their source.
- Hit the scholar once. You do not need to kill the scholar. Find and hit two more active, gold-glowing scholars; one hit on each of three scholars drops the barrier.
- Attack Rennala while she is down. Move in and deal damage, but leave yourself time to retreat.
- Withdraw when she starts glowing again. This signals that she is preparing to restore the barrier; an explosion follows. Get clear, then repeat the search-and-attack cycle until her health is depleted.
While searching, watch for falling chandeliers and thrown debris. They can interrupt your route across the hall, so keep moving and avoid hazards rather than fixating on the next scholar.
Phase two: dodge sorcery and punish openings
The barrier puzzle is over. Focus on evading Rennala’s magic, then move closer and attack during the recovery after a spell. Do not charge straight through an incoming attack just to stay on her; use each safe opening to close distance.

When she uses a major attack
For the large homing moon or another major burst, evade and keep moving until the danger passes. Once the attack is over, look for a fresh opening before resuming offense.
When she summons spirits
At lower health, Rennala can summon temporary spirits, including wolves, a giant, or a dragon. Avoid being trapped between a summon and Rennala: run to create space, let the short-lived summons disappear, then re-engage. A spirit summon of your own can distract her, but it does not replace dodging.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Attacking Rennala’s barrier: Stop and search for the gold-glowing scholars instead.
- Searching the wrong part of the room: Use the thrown books to trace the active scholar’s direction.
- Staying too long during the knockdown: Retreat as soon as Rennala glows in preparation for the barrier reset.
- Using phase-one tactics in phase two: There is no scholar puzzle in the second phase; prioritize spell evasion and safe approaches.
- Trying to defeat every summoned spirit: Create distance and wait for the temporary threat to pass before attacking Rennala again.
What defeating Rennala unlocks
Push Square’s guide lists a reward of 40,000 runes, the Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen, and the Great Rune of the Unborn. Eldenpedia says this encounter is optional for main-story progression; defeating Rennala unlocks respec and access toward Moonlight Altar. Those progression details come from a community reference, so treat them as reference information rather than an official game guide.
