You can change weapons at the nearby Makeshift Camp and adjust the target by speaking with Luke.
Find and enter the Training Area
The Training Area unlocks early and is attached to the Windward Plains Base Camp. Its entrance is toward the back-right of camp. After unlocking it, you can also open the world map and fast travel to the Training Area’s Makeshift Camp. Push Square’s location guide describes both routes.
Practice with your equipped weapon
Attack the High Purrformance Barrel Puncher to begin. The game displays contextual recommended combos and button prompts for the weapon you currently have equipped. Try a prompt several times before moving on, so you can focus on how that weapon’s actions connect rather than juggling several new inputs at once.
Change weapons at the Makeshift Camp
To try another weapon, approach the Makeshift Camp and select Equipment > Change Equipment, then equip the weapon you want to practice. Push Square reports that Hope versions of all weapon types are available by default, so you can sample each type without first crafting a stronger version.

Adjust the practice target
Speak with Luke beside the Makeshift Camp to change target settings, including its defense, movement, orientation, and behavior. For a simple first drill, leave the target in its default state while learning a move; once you are comfortable, change its settings to practice against movement or other behavior. The available source does not list every setting or establish how closely the target simulates a live monster.

For a more detailed reference, open the main menu with Options, then go to Info > Play Guide > Weapon Controls. The guide covers individual moves and useful combos. These menu names come from PlayStation’s guide; on other platforms, use the equivalent controls and the labels shown in your game. PlayStation’s New Hunter’s Handbook recommends using the Base Camp Training Area to get familiar with a weapon before heading into the field.
