To unlock Scholar and Undertaker in Elden Ring Nightreign: The Forsaken Hollows, defeat Tricephalos, return to Roundtable Hold, and speak with the Iron Menial. The Menial has a message from the Small Jar Merchant; this conversation unlocks both Nightfarers.
Unlock Scholar and Undertaker
- Defeat Tricephalos. This is the required boss for unlocking the two additional Nightfarers.
- Return to Roundtable Hold.
- Speak with the Iron Menial. The Iron Menial has a message from the Small Jar Merchant. Complete the conversation to unlock Scholar and Undertaker.
- Check your Nightfarer selection. Both characters unlock through this same route; the official guide does not specify a separate boss requirement for either one.
These steps follow Bandai Namco’s official unlock guide, published December 2, 2025.
Make sure you have access to The Forsaken Hollows
The base game, Elden Ring Nightreign, is required to access the DLC. Bandai Namco announced that The Forsaken Hollows became available worldwide on December 4, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. See the publisher’s availability announcement for those platform details.
The DLC adds two Nightfarers—Scholar and Undertaker—along with two bosses and a Shifting Earth, according to Bandai Namco Europe.

Do not confuse this with unlocking the Balancers
The Balancers have a separate unlock route. Bandai Namco’s guide says to defeat at least two main-game bosses, including Tricephalos and one other boss, and make both Scholar and Undertaker playable. Then go to the chapel that opens behind the Small Jar Merchant. Those additional requirements are not needed just to unlock Scholar and Undertaker.
