Blizzard announced two distinct additions for Overwatch 2: Perks, which add hero-specific choices during a match, and Stadium, a separate round-based mode built around player-created builds. Perks were scheduled for Season 15, beginning February 18, 2025; Stadium was announced for Season 16 and launched on April 22, 2025. The details below describe the announcement and launch-era systems, not a live guide to current balance or rules.
How Overwatch 2 Perks work
Perks are match-time upgrades tailored to the hero you are playing. In the system described at announcement, players choose a Minor Perk at level 2 and a Major Perk at level 3. The Minor choice is the smaller upgrade; a Major Perk can change a hero’s gameplay pattern or add an ability.
Overwatch 2 Lead Gameplay Designer Alec Dawson summarized the progression: “You now unlock a choice between two Minor Perks at level 2 and a choice between two Major Perks at level 3 —all tailored to your hero.” Dawson’s February 12, 2025 explanation on Xbox Wire gives the original design context.
His announcement-era examples included Lucio’s Bass Blowout, which increased Soundwave knockback, and Reaper’s Dire Triggers, which added a secondary-fire option. Those examples show the intended range of kit changes; they should not be treated as a current list or guarantee of present-day tuning.

What Stadium mode is
Stadium is a separate 5v5 mode played as a best-of-seven series. At its April 2025 launch, teams used a 1 Tank, 2 Damage, 2 Support composition, and the mode offered 17 heroes. Players chose a hero for the match, then developed a build over successive rounds using Powers and Stadium Cash.
Powers, Items, and Stadium Cash
Powers could modify abilities, add passive effects, or grant new abilities. Players spent Stadium Cash in the Armory on Items that buffed weapons, abilities, or survivability. Blizzard’s launch guide allowed players to equip up to six Items and sell them for their full value. These are launch-era rules; later updates may have changed them.

Viewpoint, maps, and competitive play
At launch, Stadium used third-person view by default, with an option to switch to the traditional first-person viewpoint. Blizzard’s launch guide described nine maps using Control, Push, or Clash variants, with rules tailored to Stadium. Competitive Stadium had a ranking system separate from standard Competitive Play; its launch guide also described seasonal rank resets and mode-specific rewards. Those ranking and content details are dated to launch, not a statement of current-season rules.
Perks and Stadium are different systems

| How does competitive ranking work? | No separate Perks ranking system is established in the cited announcement. | Separate from standard Competitive Play in the launch guide. |
When Perks and Stadium arrived
Blizzard’s original Spotlight announcement scheduled Perks for Season 15, set to launch February 18, 2025. Stadium was announced for Season 16 and later went live on April 22, 2025. Blizzard’s later Overwatch Spotlight coverage continued to discuss both systems, alongside subsequent changes. For current hero availability, perk effects, Stadium Items, or ranking rules, consult the latest official patch notes or the in-game client rather than assuming the 2025 launch details still apply.
