Mario Kart World is at its best when it turns a race into a crowded, unpredictable scramble—and its new Knockout Tour is a standout. Its connected world also changes the series’ rhythm: Grand Prix races now include travel between courses, which can make the event feel less like a tight string of circuits. The result is a strong Nintendo Switch 2 racer whose racing is more convincing than its open-world navigation.
What kind of Mario Kart is it?
Released June 5, 2025, Mario Kart World is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Its defining change is a connected world: roads link the courses, and Grand Prix races carry racers from one course to the next rather than simply restarting on a separate track. Nintendo introduced the structure as part of its April 17, 2025 announcement (Nintendo’s announcement).
That design creates a real trade-off. You get a sense of movement across a larger place, but the transitions can interrupt the quick, repeatable course rhythm that has long defined Mario Kart. Nintendo Life reviewer Alana Hagues praised the freedom and variety, writing, “But the freedom, variety, and new modes mean that I haven’t smiled this much playing a game competitively with others than…well, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.” Her review, published June 11, 2025, scored the game 8.2 (Nintendo Life review).
GamesRadar+’s June 5, 2025 review takes a more guarded view of the series’ new direction, calling it “a fork in the road that not everyone’s going to be interested in”. That is a reviewer’s judgment, but it captures the central question for prospective players: does the connected-world format add enough to the racing to make up for the time spent getting between courses? (GamesRadar+ review)

How do the races and modes work?
Grand Prix adds travel between courses
Each Grand Prix cup contains four races. The format now includes driving between courses as part of the event, rather than treating every circuit as an entirely separate start and finish. That makes the cup feel more like a continuous journey, though players who want to get straight back to a favorite course may prefer the older, discrete-track cadence.
Knockout Tour is the most distinctive new mode
Knockout Tour turns the connected roads into a long rally. Racers pass checkpoints, and players who miss the placement cutoff are eliminated. Nintendo says races can include up to 24 participants—the largest field in series history. The combination of a large pack, a route that keeps moving forward, and elimination pressure makes this mode the clearest expression of what the connected world is for.

Battle and time-trial options remain
For more familiar formats, the game includes Balloon Battle and Coin Runners, alongside Time Trials with online ghost data. Customizable VS Race rules let players shape their own races. The range means the open-road structure does not replace every traditional way to play.
Does the open world make exploration worthwhile?
Free Roam lets players leave the main routes to explore, search for hidden coins and secrets, take photos, and trigger hundreds of P-Switch missions. It gives the world activities beyond racing, but it is less compelling when the goal is simply to find a particular objective quickly. GamesRadar+ found the map and collectible tracking frustrating, a practical weakness in a mode built around searching and discovery.

Nintendo Life reported that version 1.3.0, released September 23, 2025, made P Switches already completed and Peach Medallions already collected visible on the Free Roam map. The update also added the option to select a P Switch on the map and move near it, adjusted gameplay conditions, and fixed listed issues (Nintendo Life’s version 1.3.0 coverage). This documents that update, not the game’s current version or the status of any later updates.
Are the new driving techniques important?
Charge Jumps, rail grinds, and wall rides are not just ways to make Free Roam more interesting; they also matter on the race course. GamesRadar+ argues that racers who do not learn to grind and wall-ride can be at a disadvantage, and describes some P-Switch missions as practice for these techniques. Players seeking to compete at a higher level should expect to learn them rather than rely only on familiar cornering and item tactics.

Mario Kart World requires a Nintendo Switch 2; it is not a game for the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo describes same-system split-screen for up to four players, local wireless play for up to eight, and online races and battles. Nintendo says online features require a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership. CameraPlay requires a compatible camera sold separately, but a camera is not required for the game itself.

Nintendo’s April 2025 announcement listed a regular price of $79.99 and described a Switch 2 bundle that included a download code. Those are announcement-page details, not confirmation of current pricing or bundle availability. Check Nintendo’s current store listing and local retailers before buying. Nintendo also said GameChat would be available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership only through March 31, 2026; that offer period has passed, so check Nintendo’s current service terms if GameChat access matters to your setup.
Is Mario Kart World worth buying?
If you want lively multiplayer racing and are intrigued by a large-field elimination rally, Mario Kart World makes a persuasive case. Knockout Tour gives the connected roads a clear competitive purpose, and the added driving techniques deepen the skill set. If your favorite part of Mario Kart is immediately repeating a compact circuit, the travel between courses may feel like a detour rather than an improvement. Free Roam adds diversions, but weak map and collectible tracking can make it less satisfying for players who want frictionless exploration.
The reviews reflect that split rather than a single verdict: Nintendo Life celebrates the fun and variety, while GamesRadar+ emphasizes that the new direction will not suit everyone. Buy it for the racing and be open to the road-trip structure; treat the open world as a bonus, not the sole reason to play.
