Overwatch: Classic is a limited-time mode inside Overwatch 2, not a separate game to download. Blizzard’s first version revisited the May 2016 launch-era experience, while later editions focused on other historical metas, including GOATS. Blizzard’s cited announcements cover events in 2024 and 2025; they do not confirm whether Classic is playable now or when it will return.
What is Overwatch: Classic?
Overwatch: Classic is Blizzard’s format for bringing earlier versions of Overwatch gameplay back as temporary modes within Overwatch 2. It recreates selected historical balance and rules; it is not a full restoration of the original game client.
Blizzard’s FAQ for the first event put it plainly: “This is not a separate game. This is a mode that will be playable in Overwatch 2, which you’ll find in the Events Hub and in the Arcade in the Main Menu.” That describes the announced 2024 event, not its availability today. Read Blizzard’s Overwatch: Classic event announcement and FAQ.
When could players play the first Overwatch: Classic event?
The first event ran from November 12 to December 2, 2024. It was presented as a Quick Play ruleset in Overwatch 2 and could be found through the Events Hub and Arcade during that event.

Blizzard’s official material documents that event and later Classic events in 2025, but does not establish that Classic is live in 2026 or give a return date. Treat any claim that it is currently playable as unconfirmed unless Blizzard publishes a current event announcement.
What did the 2016 launch version include?
The initial event aimed to recreate the May 2016 Overwatch Patch 1.0 snapshot. Blizzard said it included the original 21 heroes and 12 launch maps across four map categories:

| Map type | Maps in the first event |
|---|---|
| Assault | Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, Volskaya Industries |
| Control | Ilios, Lijiang Tower, Nepal |
| Escort | Dorado, Route 66, Watchpoint: Gibraltar |
| Hybrid | Hollywood, King’s Row, Numbani |
The returning rules and abilities were intended to evoke early Overwatch. Blizzard highlighted Hanzo’s Scatter Arrow, self-damage from Junkrat and D.Va’s weapons, Symmetra’s teleporter between spawn and the action, and Mercy’s mass Resurrect ultimate as examples of period gameplay.
Was it a full restoration of Overwatch 1?
No. The event used historical gameplay elements, but Blizzard said the maps would appear as they do in Overwatch 2 rather than in their original Patch 1.0 designs. The announcement specifically called out major reworks to Dorado, Numbani, Route 66, and Watchpoint: Gibraltar.

The event also did not bring back every part of the original game. It used Overwatch’s default skins and did not include the original user interface, loot boxes, or Competitive mode. Classic is best understood as a curated historical ruleset inside Overwatch 2, not a way to launch the old client unchanged.
How did hero limits work in the first event?
At the start, teams could select multiple copies of the same hero and had no role limits. Blizzard later updated its announcement to extend that no-hero-limits period through the weekend. A single-hero limit was scheduled to begin Tuesday, November 19, 2024, for the remainder of the event.

This rule changed during the event, so descriptions of the first Classic mode should distinguish its opening days from the later single-hero-limit period.

| Event or edition | Historical focus and documented content | Dates stated by Blizzard |
|---|---|---|
| First Overwatch: Classic | May 2016 Patch 1.0 aim; 21 original heroes and 12 launch maps; no hero limits initially, then a single-hero limit | November 12–December 2, 2024 |
| Overwatch 2 Classic: GOATS | September 2018 hero balance and the three-tank, three-support GOATS style. Blizzard’s notes identify Moira, Brigitte, and Wrecking Ball as added heroes, and Blizzard World, Rialto, and Busan as added maps. | Announced in patch notes dated March 25, 2025; event dates are not stated in those notes |
| 2025 Anniversary throwbacks | Overwatch Classic Launch Meta, Moth Meta, GOATS Meta, and Golden Meta | September 16–October 13, 2025 |
The GOATS edition was a distinct historical balance snapshot, not simply the 2016 mode with a different name. Its three-tank, three-support composition reflects the era it revisited. Blizzard’s patch notes document the added heroes and maps but do not state event dates in that announcement. Blizzard Overwatch 2 patch notes.
Will Overwatch: Classic return?
Blizzard said it was not planning for the experience to be a single event and that it would measure player response. That statement indicates the possibility of further editions, but it does not promise a return, specify a date, or establish current availability. The documented 2025 Anniversary event shows additional themed throwbacks took place; it does not confirm a 2026 schedule.
