Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds offers local split-screen with team-based Race Park modes; F1 25 pairs two local players in a shared team career; and Le Mans Ultimate is built around teammates handing off endurance stints, though its current availability should be checked. For a strong local race that may be competitive rather than cooperative, GRID Autosport on Nintendo Switch supports split-screen, local wireless, and online multiplayer.
What counts as a co-op racing game?
Racing games use “multiplayer” for several different experiences. In a true cooperative mode, players work toward a shared team result or manage one racing effort together. In ordinary multiplayer, friends race in the same event but compete against one another. Split-screen describes how players share a screen; it does not, by itself, make a mode cooperative.
The picks below distinguish team play, shared career, endurance driver swaps, and multiplayer competition. Where the available source confirms a player count or platform edition, it is stated; where it does not, this guide avoids guessing.
Best co-op racing games and multiplayer alternatives
1. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds — best for couch team racing
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the clearest broad couch pick here if you want several people on one system and the option to race as a team. PlayStation describes the game as supporting 2–4 players in local split-screen. Its Race Park modes include team-based play, while Grand Prix is a competitive race format; choose Race Park when cooperation is the goal.

2. F1 25 — best for a shared team career
F1 25 is the motorsport-focused option for two people who want to shape a team together rather than simply line up as opponents. PlayStation identifies it as a two-player local co-op game and points to My Team 2.0, where a player and teammate can shape a Formula 1 team together. The guide identifies it as the official game of the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship.

3. Le Mans Ultimate — best concept for taking turns in endurance racing
Le Mans Ultimate offers a different kind of teamwork: friends take turns completing endurance stints, then hand control to a teammate. That makes it a more literal shared-driver effort than split-screen racing. Motorsport Games announced the co-op mode on September 24, 2024, but that announcement alone does not establish its present availability, supported platforms, player count, or current mode behavior. Confirm those details in the current game listing before choosing it.

4. GRID Autosport — best Switch pick for local multiplayer
GRID Autosport on Nintendo Switch is a substantial option for racing together, but the supported modes should be described as multiplayer rather than co-op: Nintendo’s listing confirms two-player split-screen and races for up to eight players via local wireless or online play. Those formats put players in the same races; the listing does not establish a shared-team objective or cooperative career.

- Want couch teamwork? Start with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and select a team-based Race Park mode, not a competitive Grand Prix.
- Want to build a motorsport team together? F1 25 is the strongest fit among these picks, with PlayStation describing My Team 2.0 as a two-player local co-op experience.
- Want to share one endurance race by swapping drivers? Le Mans Ultimate has the most distinctive format, but verify current mode availability and platform support before buying.
- Want a flexible Switch race night, even if you are competing? GRID Autosport supports split-screen, wireless, and online multiplayer on the Switch listing.
Why this list has four picks, not eight
A category label or a game’s split-screen feature is not enough to establish cooperative racing. Microsoft Store’s Xbox local co-op racing category includes DIRT 5, Team Sonic Racing, Trackmania Turbo, and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, but category placement alone does not verify what players do together, exact player counts, or whether a cooperative mode is available in a particular edition. They are reasonable titles to investigate, not confirmed recommendations on that evidence alone.
