Start by checking the game and your settings, then make one change at a time: keep CPU JIT enabled, reduce internal resolution if the whole game runs slowly, and try shader caching if you mainly see stutter. Compare OpenGL and Vulkan on your own device; neither is always faster. The right fix depends on whether emulation speed, displayed frame rate, or shader stutter is the problem—and on which Citra build and game you use.
First, identify what “slow” means
Emulation speed, displayed frames per second (FPS), and stutter are related but different. A game can show a lower FPS without running below its intended emulation speed; shader compilation can cause brief pauses even when performance is otherwise adequate. Identify which symptom you have before changing settings.
- Slow throughout play: the game consistently runs below full emulation speed. Start with compatibility, CPU JIT, and graphics load.
- Brief pauses or hitching: shader compilation or another intermittent issue may be involved. Shader JIT and a disk shader cache may help where those options are available.
- Lower FPS than expected: check the game’s intended frame rate and any title-specific notes. A universal 60 FPS setting does not exist: a per-game cheat or mod is required for true 60 FPS, and not every game has one.
Also note the game, operating system, Citra build or fork, CPU, and GPU. Settings and labels differ between standalone Citra, the Libretro Citra core, and successor projects.
Check the game and reset uncertain settings
Look up the affected title’s compatibility information and notes before assuming your hardware is the problem. The archived Citra help page advises users to “Check if the problem is already reported in our game compatibility list” (Citra Emulator project help page, preserved in an archive dated March 4, 2024).

If you have changed several settings and do not know which one caused trouble, reset to defaults and test again. Then reapply changes one at a time so you can identify a setting that helps—or makes performance or stability worse. The archived support advice is useful for troubleshooting, but its historical recommendation to use a Canary build should not be treated as current download guidance.
Keep CPU JIT enabled
When your build offers CPU JIT, leave it enabled. Citra’s archived CPU documentation describes JIT as dynamically recompiling emulated ARM instructions for the host processor; instructions the recompiler does not support can fall back to an interpreter. Libretro’s Citra core documentation says enabling dynarmic CPU JIT “Can improve performance”; disabling it uses the interpreter alone. See the archived Citra CPU documentation and Libretro Citra core documentation.

The archived Citra page also gives historical claims of a 15–20 FPS boost in most games and a 200% speed boost in some games over the interpreter. It does not name test hardware, games, or a benchmark method, so those figures are not a forecast for your device or a modern fork.
Lower graphics load if the whole game is slow
Internal resolution is a direct quality-versus-workload trade-off. On a weaker device, try native resolution first, then increase it only while performance remains acceptable. In the Libretro core, the documented resolution scale runs from native 1x to 10x; the exact setting path and available choices may differ in other builds. Consult the Libretro Citra core options for that implementation.

If you mainly experience shader-related stutter, try shader JIT and disk shader cache if your build exposes them. A third-party Citra settings guide recommends hardware shaders, shader JIT, and disk shader caching, and says a cache may reduce repeat stutter after the first play. It also notes asynchronous shader compilation can reduce first-time stutter but may briefly cause visual glitches. These are not guaranteed speed gains for every game or device; turn an option back off if it causes glitches or other problems.
Compare OpenGL and Vulkan on your device
Do not switch graphics APIs on the assumption that Vulkan always wins. The third-party settings guide describes OpenGL as a safe default and Vulkan as potentially faster on newer graphics cards, while noting there is no single winner. Test both with the same game scene and otherwise unchanged settings; keep the one that runs more smoothly on your hardware.

Leave emulated CPU clock tuning until later
Keep the emulated CPU clock at its default while diagnosing general slowdowns. The third-party settings guide says a clock change can help a few titles but can also cause freezes. If you test it, change it for one game at a time and check stability. This setting changes the emulated system’s clock; it does not increase the speed of your host CPU.
