The fastest practical early-game method is usually to cast a minimal Nether portal frame in place with lava and water, rather than mine ten obsidian. It is quickest only when you can reach suitable lava and place the water and lava cleanly; a repairable ruined portal can be faster still, depending on your spawn and supplies.
How lava-and-water casting works
Instead of mining obsidian, use a bucket to place lava where each frame block needs to be, then let water convert it into obsidian. The Minecraft Wiki’s speedrun tutorial describes casting the ten obsidian blocks needed for a minimal frame. You need accessible lava, water, a bucket, and a way to ignite the finished portal. A 2021 video tutorial by Flexi demonstrates the process with a lava lake, water bucket, pickaxe, flint and steel, and nonflammable blocks.
Build only the frame you need. Practice the sequence so water does not spill onto a lava source before it becomes obsidian. The portal-construction guide from Astroworld Minecraft identifies oversized frames and lava lost to water as common sources of wasted time.
Choose the route that fits your spawn

In a random-seed run, you adapt to what the world gives you; in a set-seed run, the route can be planned around known terrain and resources. The Minecraft Wiki’s speedrun tutorial also frames preparation as a tradeoff: a tighter time goal may mean skipping nonessential resources, while more preparation can help with survival. Decide whether to cast, repair, or mine based on the actual route rather than treating one method as universally fastest.

Practise before timing the run
- Practise the casting sequence in the Minecraft edition and version you intend to run.
- Use a minimal frame and rehearse placing lava and water without spilling water onto a source prematurely.
- Include ignition in the practice so you know the frame is complete and usable before moving on.
- Compare the full sequence against repairing a nearby ruined portal or mining, including the time it takes to find resources.
Check the rules for your category
Rules depend on edition, version, and category. Speedrun.com’s Java Edition Rules v4 announcement documents a glitchless rule change banning an exploit that used a Nether portal without the normal portal animation. That is a specific example, not a complete statement of every current category’s rules. Check the current rules for the exact run you plan to submit before relying on a portal-related technique.
The cited speedrun material discusses entering the Nether as part of a whole-game run; it does not establish a universal standalone portal speedrun category or a route-specific completion time. Any time target or strategy therefore needs to be tied to a particular edition, version, and category.
