Install the official desktop version of mGBA, then open a Pokémon Emerald game file you are entitled to use. Emerald was originally made for Game Boy Advance, so mGBA—a GBA emulator with builds for Windows, macOS and Linux—is a straightforward PC option. An emulator does not include the game.
What you need
- A Windows, macOS or Linux computer that can run an available mGBA build. The mGBA FAQ lists Windows 7 or newer, macOS, Linux and BSD as supported computer platforms; current package choices are on the downloads page.
- mGBA, downloaded from its official downloads page. The page listed version 0.10.5 when checked on October 8, 2026; versions and package options can change.
- A Pokémon Emerald game file from a source you are entitled to use. The emulator is software for running a game; it does not provide Emerald.
Set up mGBA and open the game
- Choose the matching build. On the mGBA downloads page, select a package for your operating system. The page listed Windows installer and portable packages, modern and legacy macOS packages, Linux AppImages for 64-bit and ARM64, and Ubuntu builds. Its listed macOS requirements were 10.13 or newer for the modern package and 10.9 or newer for the legacy package. Check the live page because release and package details may change.
- Install or extract the application. Follow the instructions for the package you downloaded. mGBA offers different package formats, so the exact setup depends on your operating system and build.
- Load your game file. Open mGBA and use its load/open function to select the Emerald game file. The game should start in the emulator if the file is usable.
- Play with the keyboard or a controller. Keyboard controls are available by default; a gamepad is optional. mGBA supports configurable gamepad input, and many gamepads map automatically. You can adjust controls in the settings.
- Save in the game. Use Pokémon Emerald’s in-game save option. Keep a separate copy of important save data if you want a backup; do not assume that saves will work across every emulator or device.
Keyboard controls and controller setup
mGBA’s project README lists these default keyboard mappings:
| Game Boy Advance button | Keyboard key |
|---|---|
| A | X |
| B | Z |
| L | A |
| R | S |
| Start | Enter |
| Select | Backspace |
These are the mappings listed in the mGBA project README. If they do not suit you, configure the controls in the emulator’s settings. A controller is a comfort choice, not a requirement.
Getting a game file: what Nintendo says
Nintendo Support says it does not currently offer or authorize a product that lets people play or download its game files on personal computers. It also describes internet downloads of pirated game-file copies as unauthorized copies. That is Nintendo’s stated position, not a complete explanation of the law in every jurisdiction. The available information here does not establish which personal backup or extraction methods are lawful where you live; do not assume that owning a cartridge automatically authorizes downloading a ROM.
#1 Best Overall
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
- The game is an authentic copy and a new save battery has been installed!
If you want original game media, Pokémon Emerald was released for Game Boy Advance. Nintendo also advises caution when buying used games and recommends checking for counterfeits. A cartridge by itself is not a complete PC setup.

The mGBA FAQ describes Game Boy Advance emulation as “very good” while acknowledging known bugs. That is a general description of GBA emulation, not a guarantee that every Emerald feature will work flawlessly. The FAQ calls link cable support partial, and lists wireless adapter support among unsupported peripherals; the project README lists wireless adapter support as planned. Do not assume PC multiplayer reproduces every original GBA trading or battling feature.
Rank #2
- Revisit the Sinnoh region from the original Pokémon Diamond Version game and set off to try and become the Champion of the Pokémon League
- The Pokémon Brilliant Diamond game brings new life to this remade classic with added features
- Explore the Grand Underground to dig up items and Pokémon Fossils, build a Secret Base, and more.
- Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show
- A reimagined adventure, now for the Nintendo Switch system
For platform support and the emulator’s stated limitations, see the mGBA FAQ. For current builds, see the official downloads page.
