AMD Anti-Lag 2 in Counter-Strike 2: What It Means for VAC Bans

Valve added AMD Anti-Lag 2 support to Counter-Strike 2. Here’s what its game integration means for latency and what it does not guarantee about VAC bans.

AMD Anti-Lag 2 is integrated into Counter-Strike 2, and Valve’s release notes confirm the game supports it. That makes it different from a feature applied only through a driver: AMD says Anti-Lag 2 requires game-developer integration. The official documentation supports using the in-game option, but it does not promise immunity from every VAC ban.

Why Anti-Lag 2 is different

AMD describes Anti-Lag 2 as an in-game latency-reduction feature that paces CPU and GPU frames, particularly in GPU-intensive situations. It requires the game developer to integrate support; it is not a universal Radeon switch that works in every game. AMD explains the feature and its integration requirements in its Anti-Lag documentation.

That distinction matters for Counter-Strike 2. Valve’s May 22, 2024 release notes say, “Added support for AMD Anti-Lag 2.” The entry confirms that support was added to the game itself, rather than establishing a blanket rule about all driver-level latency features or every possible ban scenario. Read the Counter-Strike 2 release notes.

Where to find the setting in Counter-Strike 2

AMD’s 24.5.1 technical preview driver release notes place the option in Counter-Strike 2’s Advanced Video settings and say it would be enabled by default in that release. This is a statement about the configuration described in those notes, not a guarantee that the setting will be enabled in every later game or driver version. See AMD’s 24.5.1 release notes.

Does using it guarantee you will not get a VAC ban?

No source cited here gives that universal guarantee. AMD and Valve document Anti-Lag 2 as a feature integrated into Counter-Strike 2, which is why it should not be conflated with an unsupported driver-level behavior. But the release notes do not say that every ban is impossible, nor do they establish that Anti-Lag 2 excuses other conduct or software that violates game rules. The careful answer is that Anti-Lag 2 is the game-integrated feature Valve added support for; the documentation does not promise immunity from all VAC bans.

What AMD’s latency figure does—and does not—show

AMD reported up to an average 37% latency decrease in Counter-Strike 2 with Anti-Lag 2 enabled. That is AMD’s result, not a guaranteed improvement on every PC. AMD says its testing was conducted as of April 19, 2024, comparing Anti-Lag 2 off versus on with the 24.5.1 technical preview driver. The tests used Radeon RX 7900 GRE, RX 7800 XT, RX 7600 XT, RX 7700S and Ryzen 7 8700G systems with Radeon 780M graphics, the Ancient benchmark, DirectX 11, Very High settings, and resolutions of 4K, 1440p, 1600p and 1080p. AMD notes that system configurations vary and results may differ. The methodology and qualification appear in its 24.5.1 technical preview release notes.
