To awaken the Dream Nail in Hollow Knight, collect 1,800 Essence, then return to the Seer in the Resting Grounds. She upgrades it, allowing the Knight to reach protected memories such as the White Palace. The 1,800-Essence awakening is separate from the Seer’s later 2,400-Essence milestone.
How to get the Dream Nail
The Knight first receives the base Dream Nail in the Resting Grounds after inspecting the Dreamers Memorial. A Moth appears in a dream and gives it to the Knight. The Dream Nail can gather Essence, activate Whispering Roots, and enter certain dreams before it is awakened. See the Hollow Knight Wiki’s Dream Nail page for its listed mechanics.

How much Essence awakens the Dream Nail?
The Seer awakens the Dream Nail when the Knight has collected 1,800 Essence and speaks with her. Reaching the total alone is not the final step: return to the Seer to receive the upgrade. The Awoken Dream Nail page lists the awakening and its associated achievement.
What does the Awoken Dream Nail unlock?
The upgrade lets the Knight cut through barriers that protect certain memories. The White Palace is a major example: awakening the Dream Nail makes it accessible. The item description reproduced by the wiki says it can reveal hidden dreams or open gateways.

How the Seer’s Essence rewards progress
Awakening the Dream Nail is one milestone in the Seer’s reward progression, not its end. The wiki lists these thresholds:
