ARC Raiders shifted from a PvE concept to a PvPvE extraction shooter because its developers reportedly felt the original version was not fun consistently enough. The apparent contradiction is that some Embark founders were tired of PvP; the reported reason for the change was not renewed enthusiasm for PvP in general, but a problem with the game they were making.
Why did the original PvE version change?
According to PCGamesN’s October 3, 2025 report, ARC Raiders began as a PvE game. During development, internal tests and fresh perspectives led the team to question whether its action delivered enjoyable moments often enough. Executive producer Aleksandr Grondal described the earlier experience as having “moments of fun” that “doesn’t consistently gel,” as reported by PCGamesN from an interview with Edge.
Grondal said he joined Embark when the project was at a crossroads and that it took time to understand what the game was trying to be. CEO Patrick Soderlund likewise recalled that the team valued what it was attempting to design, but reached a blunt conclusion: “Guys, this game is not fun.” The quote is reported by PCGamesN, which attributes the interview to Edge.
What did “once every 50 fights” mean?
Soderlund’s reported estimate was that the earlier design produced an enjoyable moment about once every 50 fights. That figure helps convey why the team considered the experience inconsistent, but it is his recollection—not a published study or a measured playtest statistic. It should not be read as a formal success rate.

Why add PvP if the developers were tired of it?
PCGamesN also reported that many of Embark’s founding developers had left EA and DICE tired of making PvP games. That context makes the pivot seem counterintuitive, but it does not contradict the stated concern about the PvE build: the team’s reported decision was a response to a game-design problem, not a declaration that its developers had come to love PvP in the abstract.
The pivot made the game PvPvE: players would still contend with ARC machines, while other Raiders could bring unpredictable choices into an encounter. That changes the design from a primarily shared fight against enemies to one in which cooperation and conflict between players are also possible. The available account does not quantify how often either kind of player encounter occurs.

What does multiplayer mean in the released game?
Steam lists ARC Raiders as an Embark Studios multiplayer extraction adventure, released October 30, 2025. Its description says players can go solo or form parties of up to three, facing both ARC machines and other survivors. Steam also lists online PvP and online co-op. Those details establish that the released premise includes both cooperative and adversarial possibilities; they do not show how frequently players meet or fight one another.
