Creative director John Garvin described a world where Freakers, animals, people, weather and time of day interact—and where survival depends on adapting to what happens around you. His explanation came in a 2019 GamesBeat interview about a Sony event demo, not a present-day review.
What makes Days Gone more than “just a zombie game”?
Days Gone calls its infected creatures “Freakers,” but Garvin’s answer to why the game belongs in a crowded genre was less about inventing another kind of infected enemy than about making the world’s threats work together. In Dean Takahashi’s GamesBeat interview, published March 6, 2019 and updated June 19, 2025, Garvin said the team wanted players to encounter “a lot of variety in the types of environments, the types of experiences.”

The interview was an edited transcript following a Sony event demo. Takahashi described seeing hostile humans, infected wolves, Freakers drawn by sound, human enclaves and a grizzly bear in the Oregon woods. Those are the interviewer’s observations from the demo; Garvin’s broader design explanation was that different threats and systems can combine to make survival situations change.
What does Garvin mean by a “freakosystem”?
Garvin described Days Gone as a systems-based open world: infected creatures, animals and humans occupy the same environment, and events can depend on what the player does as well as the time and weather. In his Washington Post interview, he called the variability and dynamic nature of those systems what makes the game distinctive.

- Harsh Open World: Using the power of PlayStation 4 and unreal engine 4, days one offers an incredibly realistic and detailed open world experience. But be careful— day and night cycles, all affect gameplay and enemy behavior
- Brutal Sandbox Combat: Perfect your gameplay with an endless combination of strategy and play in every situation. Craft customized items using pieces and parts found in the field, from brutal melee weapons to traps and more
- Compelling Story: At its core, days gone is about survivors and what makes them human: desperation, loss, madness, betrayal, friendship, brotherhood, regret, love and hope. It’s about how hope never dies
- Play as Deacon St.John, a bounty hunter facing a brutal struggle for survival while searching for a reason to live
One example he gave was luring a “rager bear” toward an enemy camp. The point is not that every encounter will unfold in a completely unique way; it is that a player may be able to use the world’s existing dangers against one another instead of treating each enemy as an isolated target. Garvin also cautioned that the game’s distinction does not rest on a large inventory of wholly novel mechanics. It lies in how familiar approaches and interacting systems combine.
Who and what can threaten Deacon?
Freakers and other creatures
Freakers are not simply presented as ordinary undead zombies. In an official PlayStation Blog feature, game director Jeff Ross described them as feral and animalistic, driven by basic instincts and capable of recognizing danger. The feature and the GamesBeat demo account also describe hazards such as sound-attracted Freakers and infected wolves.

Hostile people
People remain dangerous in the apocalypse too. The GamesBeat demo included predatory humans, while PlayStation’s survival guide identifies marauders and snipers as threats during travel. These opponents make a route risky even when Freakers are not the immediate problem.
The environment and the motorcycle
The motorcycle is central to traversal and survival, not just a way to get from one fight to another. Garvin told The Washington Post that players need to keep it fueled and close enough to use. Fast travel depends on clearing infestation zones along a route, having enough fuel and being near the bike. PlayStation’s guide likewise recommends planning for the next refill and says clearing infestation zones reduces Swarmers in an area.

How do time and weather change the danger?
Garvin told PlayStation Blog that Freakers are generally stronger at night, though defeating them then awards more experience. Daylight is not automatically safe: marauders may attack the bike, and snipers may wait in tree nests. Safe houses let players wait until morning if they would rather avoid night travel.
The Washington Post interview also describes creature behavior as varying with time and weather. Taken together, these details make timing part of route planning: a player weighs the risk of traveling now against the potential benefit of taking on a more dangerous encounter.

- Expansive Open World Action – Exemplifying truly free-form gameplay, Days Gone offers freedom to explore, strategize and play “your way” in the vast high-desert of the Pacific Northwest. The hazardous environments, filled with carved out ridges, mountains, caves, cliffs mines and river basins, deliver a breathtaking backdrop to an equally diverse style of gameplay.
- Emergent Gameplay – Featuring fully explorable environments and dynamic AI enemies, players will rely on their own abilities to strategize, craft weapons and tools, explore the world, and engage in combat. With almost every car, building and environment searchable, Days Gone delivers emergent gameplay possibilities, making a player’s approach to combat and discovery a vital part of the experience.
- Stunning, Dynamic Graphics – Using the power of PlayStation 4 and Unreal Engine 4, Bend Studio has developed a high volume of rendering and gameplay technology to deliver an incredibly realistic open world experience. Realistic weather effects, such as rain, wind, snow and day-night cycles impact the gameplay. The game’s lighting is all real-time and reacts dynamically, the way the human iris does, as players move from one location to the next.
What does survival ask the player to prepare?
Garvin’s practical advice in the PlayStation feature is to keep fuel in mind, prepare Molotov cocktails or other explosives, and carry as much ammunition as possible. The guidance reflects the game’s central survival loop: leave a safe location equipped, consider what the route may demand, and change tactics when the situation shifts.
- Check fuel and the next refill point. The bike’s usefulness depends on keeping it supplied.
- Prepare weapons and crafted explosives. Ammunition and explosives give options when stealth or escape is no longer enough.
- Clear infestation zones where practical. Doing so can make travel safer and reduce Swarmers in the area.
- Adapt your approach. Garvin described three broad choices to The Washington Post: run-and-gun combat, stealth, or traps and explosives. A player can switch among them as conditions change.
Why does the story begin after the collapse?
In the PlayStation feature, Garvin explained that the game is set two years after the collapse in its fiction. That timing helps explain the contrast between buildings that remain largely intact and towns that have been looted and fallen into disarray. The same feature identifies NERO as the fictional National Emergency Response Organization; its injectors upgrade Deacon’s health, stamina or combat focus.

What the interview does—and does not—establish
The GamesBeat conversation captures Garvin’s design rationale in the context of the game’s 2019 launch, rather than offering a current assessment or a player review. The Washington Post interview adds his explanation of systemic encounters and shifting combat approaches, while PlayStation’s official feature supplies practical survival details and Ross’s characterization of Freakers. The sources support a picture of danger built from interacting threats and preparation, not a claim that every playthrough produces wholly different events.
For historical context, GamesBeat’s 2019 article and GameSpot’s March 2019 coverage described Days Gone as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, with GamesBeat reporting an April 26, 2019 release date. That launch-era wording does not establish current platform availability.
