There is no single confirmed fix for every Crypt Custodian crash on PC. Start with Steam’s reversible launch checks—restart, update Windows and graphics drivers, verify the game files, and close non-essential software. Only try the game-specific Settings-file suggestion if you have the same reported symptom: a black screen after an unexpected power interruption. Back up local data first.
First, identify when the crash happens
The timing and any error message help narrow down which steps apply. Before changing files, note whether the game fails immediately, goes black after loading, crashes during play, or fails after a particular event.
- Write down the exact error text, if one appears.
- Record your Windows version, CPU, graphics card, and graphics-driver version.
- Note whether the issue began after a game update or an unexpected power loss.
Try Steam’s basic launch checks first
Steam’s general guidance for games that fail to launch recommends updating Windows and device drivers, verifying the installed files, closing non-essential software that may interfere, and checking the game’s system requirements. Restart your PC before troubleshooting so that pending updates or temporary problems do not complicate the diagnosis. See Steam’s launch troubleshooting guidance.
- Restart the PC. Save your work and restart Windows.
- Install available updates. Check Windows Update and your graphics-card maker’s official driver update route. A driver update is a general troubleshooting step, not proof that the driver caused the crash.
- Verify the game files in Steam. In your Steam Library, right-click Crypt Custodian, choose Properties, open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to finish and try launching again.
- Close non-essential apps. Temporarily exit applications that might interfere with Steam or the game, then test again.
If Steam reports a missing executable
A “Missing Executable” launch error may mean antivirus software quarantined a game file, or that the download or installed files are corrupted. Steam recommends checking your antivirus quarantine and verifying the game files. Follow your security software provider’s instructions; do not broadly disable antivirus protection or restore a quarantined file unless you have confirmed it is safe. If the error remains, use Steam’s missing-executable guidance and contact Steam Support as appropriate.

Check whether your PC meets the published requirements
Steam lists these Windows PC requirements for Crypt Custodian. Meeting them does not guarantee a crash-free experience, but comparing them with your system can help identify a clear mismatch. For a black screen after power loss: back up, then consider the Settings-file suggestion
This step is specific to one Steam Community report, not a universal fix. On September 3, 2024, a player described being unable to continue after a black screen following a power interruption. Developer Kyle Thompson replied: “For now, I’d suggest trying to delete your settings file and see if that will help.” His post suggested checking save-file size if the issue continued; it did not establish that the suggestion fixes other launch or crash problems. - Back up the local game data before changing anything. Keep a copy somewhere outside the game’s data folder so you can restore it.
- Open the folder named in the developer’s post:
C:UsersYourNameAppDataLocalCryptCustodianCryptCustodian. ReplaceYourNamewith your Windows account name. TheAppDatafolder may be hidden; you can enter the path in File Explorer’s address bar. - Locate the file named
Settings. Preserve your backup, then delete that file and test the game. Do not delete save files as a first step. - If the problem continues, inspect save-file sizes. Thompson said a very small save file could indicate corruption. That observation is not proof that every small save is corrupt; avoid deleting saves reflexively.
Crashes during a particular fight or room
The developer’s September 25, 2024 notes for version 1.0020 list fixes for two rare crashes: one during the final boss fight, and one after returning to the menu from the Tower boss room and re-entering. These notes may be relevant if your crash matches one of those situations, but they do not explain unrelated crashes or confirm that a current installation has those fixes. - When the crash occurs and what you were doing immediately beforehand.
- The full error message, or a description of the black screen or other symptom.
- Your Windows version, CPU, graphics card, and driver version.
- Whether the problem began after a patch or power interruption.
- Which troubleshooting steps you tried and what happened after each one.
