The phrase “copycat review” can also mean something quite different in technical research: a generated summary of existing reviews.
What is CopyCat Reviews?
CopyCat Reviews describes itself as a place for “Reviews for copycat products, recipes, services, you name it!” The site’s located posts are by Blended Hope and include food and beauty content. The examples discussed here are from 2018, so they establish what the blog published then, not whether it is active today.
What did its Nutella and Costco comparison say?
In an October 2, 2018 post, the author compared Nutella with Costco’s hazelnut spread. The post reported that Nutella had a sturdier container, thicker consistency, and stronger cocoa flavor. It identified palm oil in Nutella and sunflower oil in Costco’s version as the main ingredient difference, and described Costco’s spread as easier to stir and useful for crepes or baking. The author preferred Nutella for a more chocolatey taste and named it the winner.
The post also stated a five-cents-per-ounce price difference. That is the author’s figure in a 2018 comparison, not a current price or a controlled test. The post frames the practical question as whether the branded spread’s flavor is worth the cost; readers comparing these products now should check current labels, prices per unit, texture, flavor, packaging, and intended use rather than assume the old comparison still holds.

What was in the Monat hair-care review?
An October 26, 2018 post records the author’s impressions of several Monat products: shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, air-dry cream, a split-end product, masque, blow-out cream, and leave-in conditioner. It includes an invitation for readers to comment to be connected with a friend who sold the products. That describes the post at the time; it does not establish a current seller relationship, compensation arrangement, or independently verified product performance.

Does “copycat” mean counterfeit?
Not necessarily. A 2015 UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills report defined copycat packaging as “the practice of designing the packaging of a product (or its ‘trade dress’ or ‘get up’) to give it the general ‘look and feel’ of a competing well-known brand (typically the market leader).” The report distinguishes that practice from counterfeiting, which normally involves copying trademarks.

In its discussion of the UK Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations, the report said packaging resemblance alone was not enough: the concern was whether the presentation deceived or confused an average consumer in a way that affected a transactional decision, or deliberately misled consumers about the manufacturer. It also noted, “By no means will all instances of copycat packaging be a breach of the CPRs.” This is historical, UK-specific context, not current legal advice or a statement of law everywhere.
The report relayed figures from a Which? survey commissioned in May 2013. Among the surveyed Which? members, 20% said they had at least once bought a copycat believing it was the brand owner’s product, while 18% said they had deliberately bought an own-brand product because it resembled a branded product. Of those who had mistakenly bought a lookalike, 38% said they were annoyed and 30% felt misled. The report cautioned that Which? members might be more aware of consumer issues than the population as a whole, so these figures should not be treated as population-wide estimates.

The same 2015 report said its evidence review lacked empirical evidence testing copycat packaging’s effects on prices or brands’ incentives to innovate, citing data and methodological constraints. That describes the report’s assessment at the time, not the state of all research today.

How do researchers use “copycat” differently?
In consumer research, “copycat” can describe a branded product that imitates another product’s positioning. A 2018 peer-reviewed study reported that participants preferred a near-category copycat strategy over a normally branded product in a near category and a copycat strategy in a far category. That is a finding from one study, not a universal rule about shoppers or products.
In natural-language-processing research, “copycat-review generation” refers to generating consensus summaries from existing reviews. That technical phrase does not describe the editorial work of the CopyCat Reviews blog.
